...there is a large block of people in the Middle East who, if nothing else, can at least agree on that they prefer the status quo to anything that might threaten their position of power. This includes Israel, but also Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Egypt was convenient for Israel, because they offered someone to point fingers at. They were "playing the game" just as much as anyone else who the US considers a "valueable ally" in the Middle East. As long as everyone can say "But they are fucking the Palestineans worse then we are", everyone can continue to fuck the Palestineans.
