As for the comparison between this situation and the Edwards situation drawn in the OP, there's a pretty obvious distinction between rumors of a former candidate having had an affair that produced a child backed up with photographic evidence (which is when I believe the rest of the media began to really take notice) and a teaser story, based on an anonymous tip,unsupported by any documentation, about the spouse of a candidate's alleged infidelity. Hell, even the Enquirer has pushed the story down so that's its not even a top five story on their website.

22. Actually when the NE first printed an JRE story, no one jumped on it

They continued - and JRE angrily blasted it as untrue - and it got no traction. There were then other places (Salon or Slate?) that had a piece naming names and linking to Rielle's videos, which were then pulled from JRE's site. This gained some traction - but almost everyone here still gave him the benefit of the doubt. (That includes most of us supporting other people.)

It only really gained traction here and elsewhere when NE got JRE at a hotel, I believe after midnight, that she and the baby were at. He hid in the men's room to avoid the media. Even then, many argued that he was visiting a former staffer and her baby. Edwards was out of the race and had been for a few months. This is when most of the media really started to cover the story.

The fact is the media was LESS willing to believe and print the Edwards story than they were on anyone.

As to the Palin story - Sarah Palin is imploding because of what she is. Todd cheating would no more hurt her than Bill cheating on Hillary hurt her. Last, the Alaskan authorities already disputed it.
