38. Are they able to tell if the bullets aren't rubber?
(Never got shot with either.) That would mean this is moving into a much bloodier phase. Mubarak deciding to fight, like in Iran, rather than give up, as in Tunisia.

But I've heard so many conflicting reports this morning. What we don't seem to know is whether the army is united or divided. Or on which side they'll fall.

Once the army sides with the people, it's over.

:applause: :applause: for the people.

They were giving flowers to the police yesterday and all the attempts to paint this as an 'Islamic' revolution completely failed as the people, Christian and Arab joined forces.

It's been amazing to watch all of this.

I'm waiting for them to report that the military is standing down.
The military and police are what keep these dictatorial regimes in power. It looks like police in local areas are expressing solidarity with the protestors. If the military switches sides, then we will really have regime change in Egypt.

The military is generally drawn from the local populace, where the Police are usually hand picked local political types. Be careful though, some of the higher ranking military leaders are Mubarak loyalists. This could get very ugly.

showing up to put out the fire at the building right next to it. I hope those "looters" are actually museum workers trying to save Egypt's ancient treasures.

77. Did you see the male reporter reporting from outdoors when an explosion went off?
I didn't catch his name, but he was talking to Andrea Mitchell from out-of-doors when a rather noisy explosion took place in the background. (She asked him if he could step inside, but he said they were far enough away that it was no danger, only a distraction.) Anyway, that was the reporter/interview where those rumors came up ...

95. wikileaks: Egyptian Military Succession Plans Told to US Embassy
This is interesting and may explain why military was reported to be fighting police
in Cairo and alexandria this am.
and perhaps a plan for military control and return of Mubarak's son?

"The Egyptian military planned for a "smooth" transfer of power to the president’s son in the event of regime change, according to recently published US diplomatic cables.

A senior Egyptian politician told an American diplomat in July 2009 <09CAIRO1468> that the military would safeguard a "constitutional transition of power" and implied the armed forces would support Gamal Mubarak, the son of current president Hosni Mubarak. Dr. Ali El Deen Hilal Dessouki, a former minister in the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), claimed that even though "the real center of power in Egypt is the military", they would have "no objection to a civilian" as the next president.

A remark interpreted by the US official as a "pointed reference" to Gamal Mubarak. Dessouki went on to dismiss the possible danger of protests against the current regime, calling opposition parties "weak" and democracy a "long term goal."

"Widespread politically-motivated unrest was not likely because it was not part of the ’Egyptian mentality’. Threats to daily survival, not politics, were the only thing to bring Egyptians to the streets en masse."

133. there have been conflicting reports on that, though
the reporter that aljazeera just had on a minute ago (I think Dan Caro was his name, but I'm following too many feeds to be sure ;)) was saying that he also saw protesters trying to get control of a military vehicle.

The military vehicles were apparently moved in to protect the state TV station. While watching the video on aljazeera, I saw one of the military men fire his weapon up in the air, encouraging some of the protesters to clear away from the door of the TV station.

I don't think the question of what interests the army will protect is yet fully settled.

132. There could be a couple of reasons
The first and most obvious is rage... The second is more complicated. This may be an organized group of Mubarak supporters posing as protestors looking to destroy evidence of human rights abuses committed by the regime, or to flip the script, it may be oppponents of the regime out to secure the same evidence before its destruction. Remember the Iraqi looting of the Baath party headquarters? Turns out that alot of the paperwork seized during the "looting" ended up being used by the prosecution in Saddam's trial.

128. From Al Jazeera liveblog -
8:44 pm - Time magazine's Karl Vick pulls in the first reaction from Israel that's not a "no comment." A minister in Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's government tells Vick that Israel believes Egypt's security forces will be able to suppress the protesters. "We believe that Egypt is going to overcome the current wave of demonstrations, but we have to look to the future," he said. While it would be better if Egypt were a democracy, since "democracies do not initiate wars," the minister said, "I'm not sure the time is right for the Arab region to go through the democratic process."

8:37 pm - We've seen reports from Al Arabiya television that protesters stormed Egyptian state TV, whose offices are located near our own bureau in Cairo, but they're unconfirmed and the station is still broadcasting. At the same time, we've been told that the armored personnel carriers seen driving through the streets of Cairo were en route to the state TV offices.

137. One U.S. Corporation's Role in Egypt's Brutal Crackdown
Timothy Karr

Campaign Director, Free Press and SavetheInternet.com
Posted: January 28, 2011 12:15 PM

The open Internet's role in popular uprising is now undisputed. Look no further than Egypt, where the Mubarak regime today reportedly shut down Internet and cell phone communications -- a troubling predictor of the fierce crackdown that has followed.

What's even more troubling is news that one American company is aiding Egypt's harsh response through sales of technology that makes this repression possible.

The power of open networks is clear. The Internet's favorite offspring -- Twitter, Facebook and YouTube -- are now heralded on CNN, BBC and Fox News as flag-bearers for a new era of citizen journalism and activism. (More and more these same news organizations have abandoned their own, more traditional means of newsgathering to troll social media for breaking information.)

But the open Internet's power cuts both ways: The tools that connect, organize and empower protesters can also be used to hunt them down...

141. How the protesters are doing it:
Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 02:11 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
8:51 pm - Atlantic magazine's Alexis Madrigal has posted what he says is a copy of a manual passed amongst activists to prepare their fellow protesters for Friday's demonstrations. It includes information on how to assemble a crowd strategically, how to combat armored police, and what kind of slogans to shout.

Really well done, I think I'll have to keep this for the future.

152. Guardian UK: Fox News' Egypt coverage sucks!
7.04pm GMT: Thanks Haroon, this is Richard Adams in the Guardian's bureau in Washington DC, where there has been an abrupt change in attitudes towards events in Egypt today.

The main US cable news networks had given Egypt minimal coverage so far this week, partly because of the time difference but also because of the president's state of the union address on Tuesday night absorbing so much energy.

That has all changed today, with the the extraordinary scenes from Egypt filling America's TV screens – even if the early morning bulletins were more interested in Charlie Sheen's hernia.

The exception has been Fox News, where coverage has been more muted. "You probably don't give a lot of time thinking about Egypt," a Fox News presenter suggested about an hour ago, before explaining that "groups linked to al-Qaida" were in danger of taking over the government in Cairo.

190. Egypt: Things Have Changed for Good--Mubarak Regime is Done
Daily Kos

by Mutual Assured Destruction
Fri Jan 28, 2011 at 11:44:35 AM PST

As most of you, i have been following the situation in Egypt for the last two weeks or so. With the Muslim Brotherhood joining the protest movement today (please check my previous diaries for more details), the protests have taken another dimension. We are looking at an unprecedented level of mobilization throughout the day. The curfew established by the Mubarak regime has been violated systematically in every city. Unconfirmed reports of violent clashes between the Republican Guard and the police in Asyut (about three or four hundred miles south of Cairo) have surfaced. The headquarters of the National Democratic Party have been burned in Cairo, Alexandria, Aswan, Asyut, and in many other cities. Unfortunately, the level of repression has been also unprecedented.

In yesterday's dairy, i predicted that if the Mubarak regime displayed a harsh level of coercion indiscriminately, like today's coercion, the regime's days of survival are numbered. Today, i can safely say that whether Mubarak survive these events or not, the Mubarak regime as we know it is done. There is no going back to pre-Day of Anger (Yawma Al-Ghadebe).
