Vice President says unemployed should ‘hang in there’
Vice President says unemployed should ‘hang in there’

Yahoo! asked Vice President Joe Biden Thursday to give some good advice for the unemployed. He provided a list of recent improvements to the economy, while expressing sympathy for those struggling to get by without a regular income.

"So the message is 'hang in there?'" Yahoo!'s Anna Robertson asked.

"The message is hang in there," he repeated.

Republicans gained traction in last year's election by asking "where are the jobs?" and highlighting Americans' dissatisfaction with the economy. GOP Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin also made the jobs question as the focus of his State of the Union response this week.

55. Indeed. I'm finding out in just over a week if I still have a job.
They're probably going to lay me off for "business needs" -- but the truth is more likely that they're trying to get rid of me for whistleblowing about them breaking CA labor law.

I hope something works out for both of us.

Oh, and FUCK BIDEN.

8. All the insulated ruling class types don't have a clue. They think that--

69. What he said was insensitive
A rich white man whose spent forty years in Washington can't possibly know what the unemployed are going through.

And "hang in there" is code for "what you're going through is no biggie".

He should have shut up unless he was going to announce that the administration would finally FIGHT the rich bastards who have caused all this with their two-year-long capital strike.

32. That's what he did say.
"Hang - in *there*!"

Don't kid yourself that Biden or Obama or any of the seat-warmers in
the Senate or the House actually CARE about the unemployed.

They only care about the bribes "donations" that their sponsors
are paying them to keep Business As Usual ticking over for this quarter's
profits.

70. If he had to say something, it should have been something like
"I recognize that it's an injustice that you are going through what capitalism is putting you through, and we're going to fight the power to create a new system that doesn't treat people like this".

It's delusional for Biden to pretend that working with corporate power can do anything at all to help the poor and the jobless.

A "pro-business Democrat" is just another Republican.

Saying "hang in there" is pretty much like saying "let them eat cake!"

19. We're hangin' - at the neighborhood scrap yard that is.....
Loaded up a bunch of leftover steel hubby had laying around and took down a single wide over the past couple weeks for a friend. Bonus was the roof was made entirely of aluminum!

From steelwork/welder of over 35 years to scraping metal at the salvage yard.

BTW, scrap yard always seems to have a HUGE line of cars, old pick-up trucks from neighborhood folks along with the construction trucks. Men and lots of women and kids. Hubby was in line for about an hour and a half not long ago. We haven't been scraping for long so not sure if this is normal or not

I haven't seen any aluminum cans on the side of the road or anywhere like we used to, come to think of it.

I wonder if this is another sign of the desperation and our economic depression. Any one know? Curious about the activity levels of salvage yards around the country.

Why not say 'We know it is tough, and we are going to bail you out and extend benefits and insure that your funds - like with did with the banks and other companies - do not dry up'

He is not going to say that because he has no plans on doing that, so instead he basically says 'stay tough, hang in there, sure you are suffering but hang in there while we wait on the wealthy to give you some crumbs'

31. OTOH,
It took less than a week for our government to deliver $850 BILLION dollars to the failed bankers after Paulson made his extortion demand.

Now THIS is “Bi-Partisanship” !
Better get used to it!!
Hahahahahahahahaha!

Anyone who says that Congress can't act quickly,
or is "gridlocked" because of obstructionist Republicans,
is blowing smoke.
The unemployed and under-employed in the US aren't getting help from our representatives
is because our "representatives" don't represent the lower 98% who must Work for a Living.

When we are ready to deal with this reality,
we can "change" this.

"There are forces within the Democratic Party who want us to sound like kinder, gentler Republicans. I want us to compete for that great mass of voters that want a party that will stand up for working Americans, family farmers, and people who haven't felt the benefits of the economic upturn."---Paul Wellstone

51. One of the most important posts in this thread. This is the problem, you see...
It's not so much what the Obama administration doesn't do, although that's part of it - it's what they affirmatively do when it's in their best interests.

We don't hear much about those old excuses anymore. You know...."You can't turn an ocean liner on a dime" or "He's only been in office for.." blah blah, because it's been over two years and a pattern is starting to emerge.

When either Congress or Obama want to make something happen, they can see to it.

Thank you for this reminder.

59. Gardening When It Counts
My favorite gardening book (by far)

Gardening When It Counts
Growing Food in Hard Times

By Steve Solomon
The decline of cheap oil is inspiring increasing numbers of North Americans to achieve some measure of backyard food self-sufficiency. In hard times, the family can be greatly helped by growing a highly productive food garden, requiring little cash outlay or watering.

Currently popular intensive vegetable gardening methods are largely inappropriate to this new circumstance. Crowded raised beds require high inputs of water, fertility and organic matter, and demand large amounts of human time and effort. But, except for labor, these inputs depend on the price of oil. Prior to the 1970s, North American home food growing used more land with less labor, with wider plant spacing, with less or no irrigation, and all done with sharp hand tools. But these sustainable systems have been largely forgotten. Gardening When It Counts helps readers rediscover traditional low-input gardening methods to produce healthy food.

Designed for readers with no experience and applicable to most areas in the English-speaking world except the tropics and hot deserts, this book shows that any family with access to 3-5,000 sq. ft. of garden land can halve their food costs using a growing system requiring just the odd bucketful of household waste water, perhaps two hundred dollars worth of hand tools, and about the same amount spent on supplies - working an average of two hours a day during the growing season.

63. Unfortunately...
The homeless and unemployed don't necessarily have access to 5000 sq ft of land or $400 for tools/supplies. And *IF* they are lucky enough to find 5000 sg ft of land to grow a garden and $400 for tools/supplies, what are they suppose to eat while waiting several months for their garden to grow?

61. They got nothing. No plan for job growth.
At least none that would pass Congress.

...unless you consider Biden's advice as a "faith-based" plan.

72. We left out "meet the new boss-same as the old boss", but yeah, you're right
We're going to have to find some way of sweeping all this away from below.

The "center" is just as rotten as the Right.
