8. I've read that the army is not that strong in Egypt, that it is the
special forces, funded of course by US, who are the thugs.

It's possible that the army and the regular police may end up on the side of the protestors. But only if it looks like they are going to win and there are enough of them who are willing to go along. To do it now would probably mean the death penalty.
