Question. What would our reaction be
Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 04:10 PM by DFab420
if after an Egyptian upheaval of Mubarak.

What if. Just If..

A more isolationist/religious fundamentalist party seizes power in the country?

Just curious.

(and by OUR is mean western powers and peoples, not necessarily DU)

1. Depends.
My reaction would regardless be one of disappointment at a lost opportunity.

The U.S. reaction would be based on whether the new leadership plays ball according to U.S. (corporate) rules.

2. Is it a possibility?
I've heard mention of the Muslim Brotherhood wanting to level a candidate..

Would the young population of Egypt allow for a less secular power group take hold?

5. The fundamentalists in Egypt have a track record of assassinating secularists.

8. There probably are folks coming into Egypt right now from other
places as well. Most of them will be fundamentalists. Uprisings attract ugly people.

11. Exactly
Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 04:27 PM by DFab420
and seeing how this is a leaderless uprising at the moment....

Smart, willful, and unfortunately, ugly people are good at taking fervor and steering it in directions they desire.

3. That's a very real possibility.
Our reaction? Not positive.

4. So does this come to a devil we know
Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 04:19 PM by DFab420
vs. a devil we don't?

For all of Mubarak's fault's he did somewhat liberalize Egyptian policy and allow for more accessible peace talks in the middle east right?

Not saying I support him, and a 30 year rule is about 22 years too long for any President, but what if this goes sour? Would we rather had a glad hander or a guy hell bent of turning westerners out?

I really can't answer that question. I have nothing to do with
foreign policy in the government. If history is a guide, they'll support the current government far beyond the point they should, then try to deal with whatever takes its place. We're not very good at Middle East stuff here.

10. As long as the Suez is open, Israel isn't invaded, and tourism/archeology isn't stopped
Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 04:38 PM by davepc
Then "the world" can deal with whomever, but if the hard line fundamentalists who assassinated Sadat get into power they might not feel like playing nice.

If the security situation in Suez gets bad then the EU and the USA will get involved.

12. So would it be safe to say
that various state "agents" from around the world are working behind certain curtains to make sure this scenario doesn't come to fruition?

6. As far as the U.S. goes
We'd pretty much have to take it and like it. It's not as though we have any credibility or prestige to spend right now, and our military is in no position to be projected anywhere else.

Where are they 'tweeting?'

Come on.

Have a little more 'faith' in the People

13. Fucking hilarious
How out of touch does one have to be to think that a facebook page and twitter are the real tools of any uprising.

14. lol
but haven't you heard revolutions aren't possible without tweeting it???

I am all for using social media to organize, but people have gotten the word out before without them, and will still once they move on.
