It's interesting.
From today's domestic news, a couple of things stand out: {1} The President has not contacted Mubarak; and {2} high-ranking military officials from Egypt are presently in the Pentagon.

There is also speculation that Mubarak and other wealthy folk are leaving Egypt. These may be rumors that are based in fact, or fiction.

I would hope for a nonviolent transfer of power in Egypt.

38.  Female raped by the police in full public view

...

The actions of the police and security forces incited the protestors to respond by setting fire to tyres, cars and finally government buildings.

The brutality of the authorities' is unprecedented. In a disturbing incident, CNN reporters were attacked by the secret (plain clothes Police) and their cameras stolen together with the footage. One CNN reporter recalls a disturbing and unsavory incident, "a female protestor is dragged off by her hair , taken to a side street and sexually assaulted by the police in full public view".

This account of the ladies treatment was widely aired and is living testimony to the reprehensible, indifferent, barbaric, criminal treatment of citizens by the authorities. Such violations warrant independent investigations and must never pass with out accountability.

...

"Mubarak's actions today will never be forgotten" said Mona from Alexandria, "we have lost all respect for him, the Egyptian people will always hate him and we will never stop demanding he leave us alone, we don't want him, we just want change we are not criminals for him to treat us like this, why? Why does he treat us like animals".

and wondering what the Egyptians are thinking tonight?

If they don't continue to push now, will they ever have the momentum again --

and how much stronger would Mubarak's hand be with time to reinforce policing/military -

and perhaps to jail protest planners?

Wondering what they are thinking tonight -- could be something quite different?

57. One wonders...
...if the delay was due to the need to secure support from the military.
In that case the fate of Egypt might be down to the conscript rifleman - not a thought that will give Mubarak a quiet night's sleep.

Mubarak's analysis that an excess of freedom is a major part of the problem reminds me of Bagdad Bob's strategic analysis.

69. Just heard on the Al Jazeera stream:
The reporter was saying how the cabinet had been changed in the past. That they brought in a team of technocrats to modernize the economy and to make it a 21st century economy. He went on to say that the changes hadn't trickled down to the people. My thought was that, if it wasn't trickling down, then you could say they had been successful in making it a 21st century economy.

Narus, now owned by Boeing, was founded in 1997 by Israeli security experts to create and sell mass surveillance systems for governments and large corporate clients.

The company is best known for creating NarusInsight, a supercomputer system which is allegedly used by the National Security Agency and other entities to perform mass surveillance and monitoring of public and corporate Internet communications in real time.

Other Narus global customers include the national telecommunications authorities in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia -- two countries that regularly register alongside Egypt near the bottom of Human Rights Watch's world report.
