Obama: Tax deal will 'create jobs for the American people'

President Obama signed a temporary extension of the George W. Bush tax cuts into law today, saying the heavily criticized package will "protect the middle class, grow our economy ... and create jobs for the American people."

Without the bill, all of the tax cuts that Bush signed into law would have expired at the end of the year, and American families would be looking at thousands of dollars in higher taxes, Obama said at a signing ceremony.

The event featured a first-time visitor to an Obama bill signing: Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. It also featured some notable absences, including outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Cal., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada.

Obama acknowledged that many of his fellow Democrats opposed the agreement, which extends all the Bush tax cuts for another two years. Those Democrats criticized the fact that the extensions include the nation's wealthiest Americans, even at a time when the federal debt has hit $13.7 trillion.

Some Democrats, and some Republicans, also noted that the deal will add another $858 billion to that debt.

those people to work ASAP! We have an impossible debt to pay off (kidding, our kids can do it). I'm so happy for the billionaires, they should NEVER hurt for money like the working class! :sarcasm:

12. Agreed, but both had the power to have handled this issue
at a much earlier time. We could have had a better bill, we could have had a campaign issue that might have left the Dems in control of the House, we might not have been screwed so badly.

I don't like the bill at all, however it was the Congressional leadership that let this thing get to where it is today.

17. So he just gave Republicans their talking point for 2012.
Not that they needed his help for that, but if employment does increase, which it probably will, they'll say it's because of the tax cuts and therefore we need to extend them -- all of them, of course. If employment doesn't increase, they'll make the same argument they did this time: that letting the tax cuts expire will kill jobs.

They're already saying it, in fact. DeMint, Limbaugh... a few others are already saying, 'we don't have a temporary economy, so we don't need temporary tax policy', explaining that the rich won't create those jobs if they think their taxes might go up in two years.

29. And the GOP can now claim credit for any uptick in the economy.
Thanks Mr President. You just gave the pukes their campaign slogan for 2012.
All the work, Pelosi, Reid and a great congress did will be forgotten.

If the economy goes down, the Senate is in Democratic hands...not their fault.
If the economy goes up, they will take all the credit.

This whole tax deal was a trap! There were no kinder and gentler motives here.
This trap enabled a minority party to take over the govt.

Where is Admiral Akbar when you need him.

If we had stuck to our guns and called their bluff, would the GOP have had the courage to raise the taxes of EVERYONE?
--Sigh--
What is it about DC that removes spines, and douse the fires of courage?

35. well Obama can to
If the economy improves it will help whoever is in office. So it will help the Rethugs in the house and Obama and probably a push in the senate. If it goes up. This of course I think makes the recovery even more likely to be shallow and only effect the riches in the country.

Plannin' and dreaming each night of their charms
That won't get you into their arms

So if you're lookin' to find love you can share
All you gotta do is
Hold them and kiss them and love them
And show the 'Pubs you care

Show them that you care just for them
And do the things they like to do
Sing "Kumbaya" just for them, 'cause
You won't get them
Thinkin' and a-prayin'
Wishin' and a-hopin'

Who is making up the President's buzz words? Is this some kind of purposeful immolation of the Pres?

We already KNOW that this is patently false. The President has to know this too. If he didn't "know" that Summers, Geithner, Bernanke et al were setting him up for the financial tailspin, he MUST know by now that trickle down economics is bullshit.

What. The. Fuck.
