Government healthcare: If it's good enough for Ayn Rand, it's good enough for me!
Yes, that Ayn Rand.

http://www.boingboing.net/2011/01/28/ayn-rand-took-govern.html

Noted speed freak, serial-killer fangirl, and Tea Party hero Ayn Rand was also a kleptoparasite, sneakily gobbling up taxpayer funds under an assumed name to pay for her medical treatments after she got lung cancer.

An interview with Evva Pryror, a social worker and consultant to Miss Rand's law firm of Ernst, Cane, Gitlin and Winick verified that on Miss Rand's behalf she secured Rand's Social Security and Medicare payments which Ayn received under the name of Ann O'Connor (husband Frank O'Connor).

As Pryor said, "Doctors cost a lot more money than books earn and she could be totally wiped out" without the aid of these two government programs. Ayn took the bail out even though Ayn "despised government interference and felt that people should and could live independently... She didn't feel that an individual should take help."

But alas she did and said it was wrong for everyone else to do so.

9. The point is that Rand, the ultimate hater of government intervention in anything,
turned to, um, government as soon as she found herself in need. As usual with Rand, it was all about her. :eyes:

8. If I had, you would've heard about it
turns out one of Neil's longtime friends, who has a disability, is one of the people I used to tell you about who hated my old boss in a most un-Hawaiian way. So basically, it would have been like me applying for a job with her. :(

12. Wow, just wow. I guess Atlas Dissembled.
I cannot tell my DU friends how many times I have heard similar stories of Conservatives having some bad breaks and coming to a point where they realize they need some sort of help or backup from the government. This is the whole point of Liberalism, which I define as supporting Capitalism with Social Safety nets. I guess Atlas Dissembled!

15. Suffering from lack of good self esteem and chronic depression Ayn Rand struggled to emotionally
survive her early childhood grief.

I'm reminded of this quote that I found via Paul Krugman

http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/23/im-ellsworth-toohey/

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
