Egypt Internet May Return Soon; 3 Reasons Why

The Internet was virtually snuffed out in Egypt today.

As street protests gained momentum, forcing President Hosni Mubarak to make concessions to the growing tide of demonstrators, Egyptians continued to live life without access the Internet.

The government's move to restrict the flow of information might have initially made some tactical sense. After all, the initial protests were organized on sites like Facebook and Twitter, and the unfettered access to stories on the inspirational toppling of Tunisia's government also seemed to pose a threat.

So, Mubarak and Co. pulled the plug. Below is a graphic prepared by Arbor Networks chief scientist Craig Labovitz illustrating the marked drop in Internet traffic following the Egyptian government's decision to close the information spigot.
