Police: Mom Kills 'Mouthy' Teens
Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 10:12 PM by marmar

TAMPA, Fla. - The wife of a military officer serving overseas told detectives she fatally shot her teenage son and daughter inside their upscale home because they were being "mouthy," police said Friday.

Police said Julie Powers Schenecker admitted the slayings after officers found her covered in blood on the back porch of her home Friday morning, police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said. Schenecker's mother had called police from Texas because she was unable to reach the 50-year-old woman, whom she said was depressed and had been complaining about her children.

Schenecker's husband, Parker Schenecker, is an Army colonel serving in Qatar and was notified of his children's deaths later Friday, McElroy said. He was assigned to U.S. Central Command, headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. ............(more)

These fucking wars have consequences. Being the only parent present is no easy task with kids of any age let alone teenagers. She snapped - poor kids never had a chance.

22. No normal person could do that - she has to be sick
If it was because of severe untreated depression, I wish someone had realized it so her children could be alive now. Either her depression could have been treated and she would be sane or her severe problems would have been recognized and the children removed from her control.

Yes, the situation is fucked up, but she needed help before she got this bad.

Here is the other side I think about in these horrible cases: if it is a case of temporary insanity that can be treated, how could she possibly live with what she has done once she is brought back to a normal state of mind.

No matter what, I still think, "that poor woman" and wish for better mental health care in this country to help prevent cases like this. I can hate what she has done and still feel pity for her.

56. Those poor KIDS...
Everyone who murders a family member could probably have benefited from counseling or medication. But lack of treatment doesn't give you any right to KILL someone. Are you kidding me?

I've worked in MH for 25 years and the day we empathize with murderers and not the victims is the day all hell breaks loose.

Anyone who decides to murder will find a way, regardless of the weapon.

If it wasn't a gun, it could have just as easily been arson. Kill them when they are least expecting it, just like she did with her daughter, premeditated, not spur of the moment.

60. Husband was deployed
It is so hard when your spouse is deployed and you have to maintain normalcy, while fearing every day you could become a widow/widower. I am not excusing her behavior in the least, I just think this backs up my beleif that military families don't get enough support while their loved ones put their lives on the line. It is only when a loved one comes home in a coffin that we pay any attention to military spouses. How very, very sad and imagine what this news is going to do to that poor soldier who is probably nearing retirement and was preparing for life at home with his family (buying the house).

63. If a father killed his kids in cold blood while his wife was away...
would this thread have such an outpouring of empathy?

A lot of people in jail have all the right reasons for doing horrible things to people. The childhood trauma, the poverty, clinical depression, broken families, you name it.

But to kill 2 defenseless kids? My heart goes out to them first, not her. The mother should be indicted, not the MH system.

67. Another factor to consider,

Certainly no excuse or justification, but from the MSNBC link...

"The family's home is on a cul-de-sac in a gated country club community in north Tampa. Hillsborough County property records show that the Scheneckers bought the house in 2008 for $448,000. It now has a market value of $261,000. "

Stress can do terrible things to a person. My heart breaks for this Father and those poor children, but as a mother, I also cry for this woman. Some day, if she recovers from this breakdown, she will realize what she's done and have to live with it the rest of her life.
