Jordan is protesting their Prime Minister!!!
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/01/2011128125157509196.html

Thousands of people in Jordan have taken to the streets in protests, demanding the country's prime minister step down, and the government curb rising prices, inflation and unemployment.

In the third consecutive Friday of protests, about 3,500 opposition activists from Jordan's main Islamist opposition group, trade unions and leftist organisations gathered in the capital, waving colourful banners reading: "Send the corrupt guys to court".

The crowd denounced Samir Rifai's, the prime minister, and his unpopular policies.

Many shouted: "Rifai go away, prices are on fire and so are the Jordanians.''

Another 2,500 people also took to the streets in six other cities across the country after the noon prayers. Those protests also called for Rifai's ouster.

Who else LOVES this!??

1. P.S. "Islamist" is not a word, technically.
I've know this for years - people who follow Islam are Muslim. It's like calling a Christian and Christianist. Awkward and means something totally different.

I believe Thom Hartmann spoke of this odd phrasing this week.

7. Wrong. An Islamist is somebody that thinks Sharia Law should be imposed and...
...rejects the separation of religion and government. They are not unlike our Dominionist fundies that want "Biblical Law".

18. That's a new definition.
It's not accepted by Muslims - and, hey, it's THEIR religion.

Jordan king urges speedy reforms ahead of Friday’s demos
By ABDUL JALIL MUSTAFA | ARAB NEWS

Published: Jan 28, 2011 00:57 Updated: Jan 28, 2011 00:57

AMMAN: Jordan’s King Abdallah on Thursday urged the government and the parliament to speed up "comprehensive" political, economic and social reforms.

The monarch’s remarks came 24 hours before a coalition of opposition parties, trade unions and activists said they planned to stage demonstrations after Friday prayers to press their demand for genuine reforms.

...

He said that all cases of alleged corruption and favoritism should be addressed in a satisfactory manner.

"All files should be opened to the public, doubts should be cleared and mistakes corrected,” the monarch said.

Jordan Human Rights
Human Rights Concerns

Amnesty International continues to be concerned about torture and ill-treatment in detention in Jordan, as well as the link between torture, unfair trials, and the death penalty. Amnesty International has particular concerns about the application of the death penalty in Jordan because there is a pattern of death sentences, and sometimes executions, occurring as a result of unfair trials where confessions extracted under torture are used as evidence against the defendants. There has also been a pattern of suppression of freedom of expression and association, especially in the wake of laws restricting freedom of the press and expression that were promulgated in the fall of 2001. Several clerics and journalists and members of professional associations have been arrested, detained, and charged for peaceful expression of their opinions. The practice of killing women and girls by husbands or family members because they have allegedly engaged in behavior that goes against social norms (so-called "honor killings") continues to be a problem in Jordan; measures calling for stricter punishment for those committing honor killings have failed to be enacted.

Protect female migrant workers in Jordan

On 30 October 2008, Amnesty International launched a report on the abuse of foreign women domestics who work in Jordan. There are about 40,000 registered foreign domestic workers in Jordan, and an additional estimated 30,000, many of whom suffer violations of their human rights.

25. I love it! Comment from Angry Arab, Prof As'ad AbuKhalil

Queen Youtube went silent

As you know, Queen Youtube of Jordan uttered a few words about Tunisia on Twitter (only that "we are watching developments in Tunisia") before she was silenced by a large number of angry Arabs who wrote her back, mockingly. They urged her to watch developments in Jordan. She has not tweeted about Egypt. How cute.
