1. I've had the remote wrested from my hands, so I'm relying on DU now - and
I know I won't miss a thing!

My bellwethers - brother and sister-in-law are only aware of "Egypt" because they've heard it on the car radio driving home, just the top of the hour news blips. They have absolutely no interest or comprehensive of what's going on. I do think they're representative of many Americans. Which is why almost everybody in the ME is in the streets and everybody in America is pissed because Lock Up isn't on tonight. :eyes:

8. They simply do not have the people
and that is by design.

Part of the reason are your guests tonight. They don't give a shit. So... that trash is a better driver of eyes on screen than a revolution in one of them "dark" places with strange names.

Sadly that is the case.

14. Sigh. I wish they were my "guests" so I could fake an intestinal illness and bid them adieu,
but I live with them. Their house, their remote. Poor, poor gateley. :(

16. It gets even better - I was watching a live feed earlier today from Egypt (Al-Jazera, I think) . . .
And next to the feed was a countdown clock giving how long it would be before new episodes of "Glee" were going to air.

It was a little more than nine days, btw.

20. I can top that
Did you see Ratigan's Steel on Wheels program discussing Egypt from a ski lodge in Colorado? The split screen of Egyptians rioting and the pristine snow-capped mountains was surreal.

I've been watching the sites from Egypt all day. I don't think I've ever witnessed such bravery from so many people in my entire life. It is my hope Mubarek will step down very soon, and El Baradei (sp?) steps in as interim president until an election can be held.

I'm here with you fellow DU'ers watching history transpire before our very eyes. I'll check in often for the next couple of hours.

9. The army really has the ball on their court
they moved in with M-113 APCs and M1-A1 Abrams tanks... to secure critical assets.

The 113 I get it... the armor... is heavy armor.

(What is sad is I can look at footage and recognize the damn gear)

12. I had read that the army (conscript) was expected to be with the people
as opposed to the police (career) who were expected to side with Mubarek.

Non-official source, just opinion.

15. It is the next few hours that will tell us
depends on how they do command... if they are still using Russian Doctrine... well independent action is not quite what they are trained for.

US Doctrine gives troops independence at all levels. For people with no military training this does not matter, but it is a huge thing... in how an army works, especially in a situation like this.

21. Thanx for this Synnical.
I have bookmarked it now. The blackout of the net is chilling. Cameras can still take pictures and videos. The blackout is being protested by international press, world leaders.
It will be lifted and we will see what they didn't want us to see and read.

17. From Al Jazeera feed
6:04 am Al Jazeera's Jane Dutton, reporting from Cairo, says the National Museum in Cairo has not been damaged by the fire that destroyed the neighboring office of the National Democratic Party last night.

5:29 am Associated Press news agency is reporting that China has blocked the word "Egypt" from the country's wildly popular Twitter-like service, while coverage of the political turmoil has been tightly restricted in state media.

Methinks China don't want any ideas.
