Desperate US

The US is now desperate. It wants (for its imperial interests and for Israel) to preserve the dictatorial regime at all costs. I won't be surprised that US forces Mubarak to appoint 30 vice-presidents in the hope that one of them would click.

22. Wiki on Omar Suleiman
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Suleiman

Early life and education

Suleiman was born in Qena in Southern Egypt. He left Qena for Cairo in 1954, at the age of nineteen, to enroll in Egypt's prestigious Military Academy. He received additional military training in the former Soviet Union at Moscow's Frunze Military Academy. Furthermore, he holds bachelors and master degrees in Political Science from Ain Shams and Cairo Universities in the mid-1980s. Suleiman was transferred to military intelligence, where he began what was to be a long relationship between Egypt and the United States.

We'll see if this will wash with the people of Egypt.

23. WSJ: ElBaradei Is a Wild Card
By MARGARET COKER, JAY SOLOMON and MATT BRADLEY

With Egypt's long-stagnant political landscape apparently now in flux, it remains to be seen whether Nobel laureate Mohamed ElBaradei can emerge as a credible opposition leader.

The ambitions of Mr. ElBaradei aren't known, making it uncertain whether he would be a candidate to unite the splintered Egyptian opposition movement and lead the large Arab nation, though his stature in the country is certainly high-profile in the current turmoil: Security forces placed him under house arrest Friday, according to the Associated Press.

A succession of rallies and demonstrations, in Egypt, Jordan, Yemen and Algeria have been inspired directly by the popular outpouring of anger that toppled Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali. See how these uprising progressed.

In February 2010, Mr. ElBaradei helped re-energize Egypt's splintered and demoralized opposition movement that had been worn down by years of police harassment, arrests and personal animosities. When he flew home Thursday from Vienna after a long absence to join nationwide demonstrations, Mr. ElBaradei said he would consider taking charge of a transitional government.

But the veteran diplomat had no organizing role in the protests that kicked off this week and his reputation in Egypt has flagged in recent months in part due to his lack of presence on the ground...

An Angry Arab comment from this morning

The US is cooking in Egypt
Aljazeera is reporting that Egyptian Army's chief-of-staff, `Anan, who was in Washington, DC until yesterday, will be sworn in as the second vice-president of Egypt. The man (Mubarak) who always insisted that there is no need for a vice-president, now has two. The US is clearly trying to abort the change agenda of the Egyptian people but I doubt that the mass genie which is out of the bottle--how is that for a cliche?--will put up with that plot.

25. Reuters: Egyptians defy curfew to demand Mubarak's resignation

Egyptians defy curfew to call for Mubarak to go

By Patrick Werr and Alison Williams

CAIRO | Sat Jan 29, 2011 10:13am EST

CAIRO (Reuters) - Thousands of angry Egyptians defied a curfew on Saturday for the second day in a row and stayed on the streets to push their demand that President Hosni Mubarak resign.

The army had warned that anyone who remained on the streets after 4 p.m. (9 a.m. EST) would be in danger, but as the deadline passed, protests continued in central Cairo and the port city of Alexandria, witnesses said.

Soldiers took no immediate action. They seemed relaxed and some protesters chatted with troops mounted on armored vehicles, the witnesses said.

On the fifth day of unprecedented protests against Mubarak's 30-year-rule, it looked increasingly as if the army held the key to the nation's future...

30. Word of caution from Agry Arab
word of caution

Comrade Joseph sent me this (I cite with his permission): "I am very worried that the Americans have taken over the direction of the Egyptian revolution. Let us remember that all possible candidates to replace Mubarak that even al-Jazeera is mentioning today are all handpicked by the Americans, including Barad’i, as well as Army chief of staff Anan, or anyone else for that matter. Obama has proven once more that the biggest anti-democratic force in the Arab world remains the United States, and the biggest enemy of Arab democracy since WWII till now remains the US. This has to be constantly repeated and the Egyptian people must be very cautious in what happens next. The United States wants to mortgage the freedom of all Arabs, including 84 million Egyptians to Israeli security and American profits. This is the crucial game being played today in Egypt in preparation for the maintenance of US power and influence in Egypt. Al-Jazeera must make this the main topic of discussion today." I am not as worried; there is so much that the US can do to control the situation.

201. Thanks Catherina. That will be a concern as I'm sure the U.S.
is working frantically from behind the scenes to try to exert its interest before it gets out of their control.

They cannot be trusted. They are not trusted anymore. They worked hand in hand with Mubarak as he terrorized his people for so long and looked the other way. How could any Egyptian trust any government that has the stamp of approval of the U.S. at this point?

Their deliberate refusal to address the real grievances of the people, the refusal to achknowledge the torture and the oppression even now, to refuse to call Mubarak a dictator, all these things show that nothing has changed as far as U.S. policies are concerned and if the new government abuses Egyptians, they will look the other way again.

Glad the Angry Arab is pointing all this out so maybe it can be avoided.

I would not trust him one bit. Saw him in an interview on Al Jazeera two nights ago where the AJ reporter tried to get him to address the human rights abuses the people were subjected to. He would not respond or acknowledge them at all. Kept repeating basically what he said above. 'They are looking to THEIR GOVERNMENT' .... NO, they are NOT, they are asking their government to go. They FIRED the government.

This is typical of him. He's like a robot sticking to the script.

"A source from within the Presidential Guard has claimed to my friends in Cairo that the army intends to end the protests on Sunday, by any means necessary even if it meant violence and bloodshed. Junta goons are causing chaos in Cairo to claim an unstable situation which will extend until Saturday. Then under the guise of bringing back order, they will "crush them with any amount of force needed!". The sources are unsure of the American role but believe the Americans will go with it."

140. I don't think so, AJ showed a soldier on top of a tank telling
people "we are on your side, but let us handle the thugs". I think the Army is getting ready to stop Mubarak's thugs from committing more crimes. He told the people "right now, we can't tell the good people from the bad people, get off the streets and let us handle the thugs".

But the Chief of Staff is a US man who was just meeting with Washington. I think the plan is for the Army to step in and crush these protests soon so that US-friendly *stability* can be restored.

Your quote has a point but I think the main objective is to quell these protests because of the domino effect. I hope you're right.

Abbas phones Mubarak to express solidarity
< 29/01/2011 - 03:43 PM >

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- De facto Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas phoned Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak on Saturday to affirm his "solidarity" with him in face of the growing popular unrest in his country demanding his removal.

A statement by Abbas's office said that he expressed keenness on security and stability of Egypt during the phone call.

Abbas-controlled PA in Ramallah is panicked over its fate in the event Mubarak, its strong ally, was toppled.

Chaos in Cairo
Posted by Jenna Krajeski

At a quarter past seven on Saturday evening in Cairo, a young resident from Kasr Al Aini hospital, one of the city’s largest, called me. I had met him at the hospital earlier that day, but the situation, he said, was now much worse: he and a number of other doctors had sequestered themselves in a small room adjacent to the operating theatre in the hospital’s older building. Looters had entered the building with guns and knives, stealing things and killing people. He said that there was no one they could call for protection. They had had to abandon patients in intensive care.

When the managing editor of Al-Masry Al-Youm, an Arabic and English newspaper where I work, reached the doctor again ten minutes later, his voice was panicked, and all that was discernible amid the noise was the same message: the doctors and patients in Kasr Al Aini hospital were trapped, as looters advanced with weapons.

If the protests this week demonstrated anything, it was the thuggishness, ineptitude, and corruption of the Egyptian police force. After protesters by the thousands pushed them from the streets of Cairo, the mood was celebratory, but then the looting began. Suddenly, the lack of a proper police force, one that has any regard for the safety of citizens, became abundantly clear. All over the city, people have gathered together in their homes while looters enter stores and residences, particularly in Maadi, Rehab, and Nasr City. Residents are roaming the streets with sticks, trying in any way they can to protect their homes and businesses from the looters.

Adding insult are reports that many of the looters are themselves police officers. But in the general chaos in Cairo it has become impossible to tell for sure. Because of fires at police stations, there are also rumors that prisoners have been freed, and that convicts have joined in the looting.

192. Mubarak is a DICTATOR!
He is overseeing brutal torture and authoritarian methods in his 30 years in office and the Egyptian people had enough!

Mubarak is the living example the America NEVER learned the lesson from Saddam Hussein. US-Backed dictators are just as bad as America's "enemies".

Freedom for Egypt!
