What's left of The Beach Boys to assemble at the Zombie Reagan altar to wish it a happy birthday

Admirers use ingenuity to honor Reagan centennial

The former president's 100th birthday will be celebrated with dinners, speeches, essay contests, a ceremony at the Super Bowl and a concert by the Beach Boys.

Ronald Reagan admirers wanted to go all out to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the former president's birth on Feb. 6 — a fighter jet flyover, a 21-gun salute and a Beach Boys performance are among the commemorations. But the Great Communicator's centennial birthday conflicts with another great American mega-event: Super Bowl Sunday.

The Reagan foundation plans a concert at the Reagan library featuring, among others, the Beach Boys, who were banned from the capital's 1983 Fourth of July celebration by Interior Secretary James G. Watt, angering Nancy Reagan. Watt said the group attracted the "wrong element" but changed his tune after the president and Mrs. Reagan made it clear that they liked the Beach Boys.

11. Come to think of it...
:dilemma: I could go with that one.... as the nightmare continues from the age of deregulation and dementia in the White House leaves its big shit stain trail on K Street!

3. I'm so sorry to hear the Beach Boys would attend this event.
Am I crazy or what but does anyone else hold a birthday celebration for their deceased loved ones?

5. Columbus Day, Martin Luther King Day, Robert E Lee Day, Washington's Birthday...
They are hoping to make Reagan Day a national holiday, so they are trying to start a grass roots tradition that sticks. Yes, you are allowed to vomit.

6. Oh....I clearly wasn't thinking, was I? NOW, I see what they're up to.
Nancy Reagan doesn't want to go to her grave without the comfort of knowing her dear Ronnie will be honored into perpetuity.

21. Christmas is a celebration of a dead guy's birthday!
Easter is the ultimate zombie holiday since it celebrates a dead guy coming back to life.

Just sayin'.

9. Beach Boys? Try Beach BOY!
Mike Love is the only original guy left who's still milking the name. Al Jardine's been fighting over the name for years and has been ostracized. Brian Wilson wisely knows that the whole thing's a sham and has stayed away for decades.

And AFAIK, Love is a wingnut. And perhaps the least shallow one in the group.

But it IS one of the best books written about a rock band, period.

19. I've decided to start reading books about icons from when I was young in the 50s, 60s and 70s
Started with the giant bio of John Lennon, the one with the white cover. Then H&V came to my attention. What lives and what a book! A page turner, for sure.

I'm on the waiting list at the library for the new Keith Richards bio. And I hope to find a really good one about Dylan.

:fistbump:

23. "Shakey"...the Neil Young bio...is EXCELLENT.
Jimmy McDonough, the author, had "insiders access" to Young and his associates.

The book "stops on a dime"...because Young got a look at the first draft, didn't care for the honesty, and shut down access to everyone.

Short version: He's a genius, he did a couple of truckloads of drugs, had no idea of how to handle relationships, and when something bothered him, instead of handling it like a responsible adult, he just walked away.

17. Boy and a half, actually...
...Bruce Johnston was brought in when Brian could no longer handle the road, so he's done his tenure with the original members, and he's involved in the current travesty with Love.

The EXCELLENT book "Heroes and Villains" sheds a lot of what makes Mike Love tick. On one hand, he positioned himself as the "spiritual" member of the group with his enthusiasm for TM and the Maharishi and such, on the other, he used to enjoy beating the crap out of his various wives / girlfriends / etc. Go figure, eh?

Last year there was talk of Love, Wilson & Jardine reuniting for a show / a tour / who knows what the hell form it would take. Brian doesn't need the money...Al probably does after the way Love sued his ass over using the name.
