California mayor wants to broadcast bird songs

It may sound like a bird-brained idea, but the mayor of a Mojave Desert city wants to brighten the streets by broadcasting recorded bird songs.

LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) — It may sound like a bird-brained idea, but the mayor of a Mojave Desert city wants to brighten the streets by broadcasting recorded bird songs.

Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris proposed the idea during his State of the City talk on Monday.

The Antelope Valley Press says Parris wants to play the bird chatter from loudspeakers on Lancaster Boulevard. The mayor says there's science to show that listening to birdsong makes people happier.

Parris is known for his flamboyant ideas. He got a law passed giving the Southern California city the right to castrate pit bulls, ordered city officials to learn the Mandarin language in a bid to woo Chinese business, and riled some people by saying he was growing Lancaster into a Christian community.

6. And Captain Beefheart
Both attended Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, though neither were native to Lancaster. Van Vliet and Frank Zappa became friends; eclectic music was the bond.

10. Zappa had a major distaste for fundies.

I remember reading an interview with him one time where he was saying something along the lines of "If you want to raise healthy, mentally stable children, keep them as far away from the church as possible." I bet he'd have a major problem with this.

14. My personal fave is still Broadway The Hard Way.
He completely destroyed fundie mentality on that album, and the great thing is - it was recorded in 1988 (I was 8 at the time, so I didn't really understand its significance), and I still listen to it regularly. Zappa definitely told it like it was, if only he were still around today!

5. Make the people happy and confuse the hell out of the birds
and probably disrupt their peace of mind for the sake of the peace of mind of people.

Bird brain idea.

9. Idiots. They could get the real thing, birdsong that is,
by planting trees and seed and flower plants that attract birds and building some modicum shelters for them from predators, but then the residents would complain about the bird poop.
