What is happening with Americans in Egypt?
Are they safe?

I'm sorry, I haven't been following this too closely, but I have a friend whose daughter is in Egypt right now.

1. I do not think Americans will be targeted...
... but they should leave the country if they can.

At some point the Marines might help evacuate them.

2. The city is very large and has a population of 8 million
Edited on Sat Jan-29-11 04:41 PM by lunatica
The demonstrations are only in small parts of the city. This doesn't mean they aren't important, just that they are only in certain parts of the city. And this is against their government. If they want to make Americans part of it they'll go to the US Embassy to demonstrate. Up to now they've confined their anger towards their government.

Corrected the population number.

7. I think you're talking about the country, not a city.
Edited on Sat Jan-29-11 04:43 PM by MineralMan
The population of Egypt is about what you say. There's more than one city in Egypt.

The population of Cairo and its suburbs is about 17 million.

Edit: Posted before the correction.

5. I agree it unlikely Americans will be targeted, but 90K in Egypt
So, the US has long had plans, including a permanently stationed aircraft carrier in the Region...

But, more specifically, it has been reported that there are two US warships in the Red Sea, prepared for an evacuation if it were to become necessary.
