guys...my once a year plea
I work with our local P.A.W.S. group and I get to see close up how animals get mistreated and how groups of dedicated people rehab and home so many animals. We get the good stuff..not just dogs and cats,we get goats and horses and cows and everything in between.

This year I personally hit up our local stores for dog and cat food they couldn't sell because of busted bags and gathered over 4,000 lbs of food for our local rescue.

That's not bragging..that's what we all can do if we try.And we need to try.

My once a year plea...PLEASE find a local no euthanize rescue..I could care less if it's PAWS or any other organization...Just help.Give them ONE DAY of help..give them ONE BAG of good nutritious food..Give whatever organization is in your area ONE DOLLAR towards keeping these rescues going.

Thank you

4. it works :)
we hit up wally world..Krogers..K-mart..Magic Mart.

They get to write off the busted stuff and we get food for the critters.

It's amazing how much food 38 dogs*current population* and 100 or so cats *who can count that high while they move* can go through.
Bottom line..help your local please.I'm not in any way asking for help and to make sure this won't cause problems won't accept help here.

I just ask in my once a year *or so* that people seek out there local non euthanize shelters and for one day just say *how can I help*

The shi-tsu is like the one ring...the evil that binds them all.

She is a trip. She weighs 18 lbs now *fatass* and rules all the dogs on the hill

11. I had german shepherd brothers for 14 yrs
They both got into such bad medical condition that I had to put them down. One had a terrible case of hip displasia and was having to drag his hind legs and the other had the worst case of ruptured bowel glands the vet had ever seen. He said it was time and came to my house to do the deed. That was hard. They had lived together with us their entire life.

8. Big Huge Kick and Rec from another no-kill rescue volunteer. Wal-Mart donates most of
the food we need at our shelter (dogs and cats only) which is a huge help, but monetary donations are way down and it costs a lot of money to heat our shelters and provide veterinary care for all of them. Almost as important, as you know, is finding volunteers to come and spend a little time with them; to help feed, clean, medicate, and "love" them; to play with them and help them learn to socialize. Some of the "senior" cats and dogs will probably never be adopted and will spend the rest of their lives with us. These are the ones that need the most love and attention. Ohhhhh... the heartbreaking stories you and I could tell.

I help with cleaning and feeding and whatever needs done.
I only get to get there every other day. It's fun watching the *regulars* who see you coming.

we have our share that we know will never be adopted..they will be taken care of.

I rarely open up like this...sorry if I offended anyone

18. Thank you Backwoodsbob.
Two months ago I got my cat Jet from a rescue operation called HOPE, here in northern NY. I got him for my 6 year old cat to have a friend, because I work, and am not always home. What a joy Jet is for Bud and myself. :) The two cats are best friends, and I now have another very "user friendly" cat. Thank you for the post, I will try to help in some way. Keep up the good work.

19. I do fundraising for the rescue group I co-founded.
I make and sell bandanas and homemade dog biscuits and raise hundreds of dollars each year. I've driven thousands of miles over the past 10 years transporting dogs from shelters to rescues or to no kill shelters. Yesterday I dropped off at our town shelter a box of discarded towels and blankets from the linen service my hospital uses - the first of what will be a monthly delivery.

So, even though I occasionally throw the "f" bomb and flip the bird when I get frustrated, there is a good side to me, backwoodsbob. We shouldn't judge people based on one incident, should we ?

Our dog came from a happy home, but was about to be surrendered. Thank for the reminder to give some food. I don't have much time, but I can pick up a couple bags of extra food for our shelters.

22. I donate regularly to our local Humane Society, and also to
one in a different city, because when one of my cats died I couldn't find one to adopt in my town, so a friend took me to Leawood, Kansas, and paid the adoption fee for me to get an eight-and-a-half-month-old kittie from a rescue group there.

By the way, a young man I know is trying desperately to raise materials or funds for 5 large doghouses he is building for the local Humane Society as his Boy Scout Eagle project. He has a limited time frame to work in, but the builders he has contacted are not willing to donate the materials, which is what he had been counting on.

Does anyone here have any ideas for how I can help him with his materials or fund raising for the project?

Do you have a Freecycle group in your area ? He might be able to get some stuff there.

I have the big truck so I get to work with the local wally world/k-mart/krogers/food city.

to a person every manager I have dealt with has not only been helpful but wanted to know what else they could do.Half our setup is freebies from Lowes and we get literally TONS of free food from the stores mentioned above.

30. When I was freaking out
Edited on Sun Jan-30-11 06:44 PM by lillypaddle
and okay, I was over-reacting to some high blood pressure tests, I was sure I was gonna die any second. And I was worried about my two rescue doggies and what would happen to them ... and Backwoodsbob sent me a pm and told me that he would take my dogs, no matter what, and would even drive here to Atlanta to get them.

This guy loves him some animals. And now I've been somewhat settled down, and don't feel like I'm going to drop dead in the next five minutes, and I will never forget the sense of relief I felt when I got his message.

I'm going to donate SOMETHING first thing tomorrow. Thank you, Backwoodsbob, for keeping hope alive, and for caring.

:loveya: You are the BEST!
