On the airport at Cairo... I will not be too shocked
if in the coming days MILITARY craft (transports) from a slew of countries, fly in to take citizens out. It really depends on whether Cairo starts operating close to normal or not... but I would not be too shocked if there are talks right now with the Egyptian military to allow C-130s from a slew of countries to fly in to get people out.

10. Maybe Israel
Is that impossible? How about the coast road to Libya? I've never been that way. Just know that things get ugly when they're out of control. Red shirts in Thailand for example, or E. Timor, etc....

14. here is a map

The med road, from what the newsies are saying is blocked.

Temps day time temps reach into the forty degree centigrade... that is close to 120 F... and once you reach the Sinai... temps get even worst.

Without desert survival skills, they are actually better off at the Airport... I mean people might just think they can... and NOT take enough water... with those temps, from memory... that is a quarter of a litter an hour if you are not exerting yourself.

24. All of North Africa is in Revolt, Tunsia, Libya, Algeria, Yemen
Your only shot is the airport or by boat. I'd try & hop a cruise ship or a boat to Turkey or Greece. Your either surrounded by desert, Mediterranean Sea or red sea.

4. There are that many? They will use the med assets
and the two Marine carriers in the Red Sea. But you can bet on that not just dusted, but being seriously spun up. They need permission to do this... or it is an act of war.

12. have you heard something?
has there been an order to evacuate? what are you basing this on? my sister is in Abydos (along with others from the us and Europe) and I haven't heard from her since Thursday. So while I am not panicking, if you have some real info I sure would appreciate it (either here or by PM if necessary)

thanks

15. State recommended non essential travel not to be done
as of yesterday.

They also recommended people keep an ear to the Embassy in Cairo (they have net service back I think), and that Americans stay away from the mess. They included the usual carry your passports, and a local Cell.

The non travel advisory is one step away from a general get prepared to get the hell out.

Also there are two Marine carriers in the Red Sea right now, per MSNBC yesterday... and just from having been married to the Navy, I am betting US Navy assets are on the way... or already in area... as in that area of the Med... on station.

The DOD has contingency plans for all of this, and I am basing this on these threads of information, and conditions being reported at the airport. Some flights are still coming in and out... but nothing you could call regular.

18. Drama much?
The State Department always has non travel advisories out. I have lost count of the countries I have been in when State had a non travel advisory. They are just issued as a CYA in case something happens however improbable. Americans are not threatened by anyone in Egypt. The Cairo airport is operating under curfew restrictions but normally. European airlines which are the main carriers for Egyptian travel such as British Air and KLM are operating normal schedules into and out of Cairo. Marines are always on alert in these things, again as a CYA. Americans can go to Egypt but most of the sites are closed at the moment so there is little point unless you want to see the city which I recommend.

Egypt is a scary place at the moment in case you hadn't noticed. Not a good time to go sightseeing.

23. As I said the Pyramids are closed.
That is the reason touring companies are canceling, not because of abstract 'danger'. I would be happy to go to Cairo but I was just there last year for the third time. I have been in several countries that had civil wars going on at the time --Cambodia, Peru, and Lebanon to name just three. Never had any problem or issues. Life is too short to listen to CYA bureaucrats hiding behind their desks in DC.

29. Their evacuation lists are very short, ours are about 50K people
why it is a little more logistically complex.
