Search for sailors missing in Antarctic waters called off

Maritime New Zealand say the search for 17 missing crewmen from a South Korean trawler that sank off Antarctica has been called off.

The decision brings the likely death toll from the tragedy to 22.

Maritime New Zealand says three South Korean trawlers searched overnight but found no crewmen in the remote area, 1,000 nautical miles north of the McMurdo Antarctic base.

The trawler, Number One Insung, sank suddenly with its owners saying it may have collided with an iceberg.

A coastguard spokesman says the crew included Koreans, Chinese, Indonesians, Vietnamese and Filipinos .

2. It was just a search for bodies anyhow.

Once they hit the water their life expectancy was ten minutes.

RIP.
