Day 5 of the Egyptian Revolution - "No to Mubarak, no to Sulyman. Both are agents of the Americans"
Edited on Sun Jan-30-11 12:33 AM by Catherina
Today's big chant per Al Jazeera is "No to Mubarak, no to Sulyman. Both are agents of the Americans" (it rhymes in Arabic).

This photo is from yesterday but it's such a great intro

175. It is, and for several reasons...
The United States should no longer prop up this falsely elected dictator.

So far, I'd say our ever narrowing corporate controlled media hasn't pointed to the protesters as more than "anti-government". Anti-government? It's just another front page above the fold description, while below the fold, we get ready for the SuperBowl in the burgh.

Based on the number of people who are clueless in my residential community about what is going on elsewhere, they remain on a Soma holiday.

So, I'm waiting for something better, realizing all along that it won't happen until we are at a similar point. And that really sad day is not far down the road.

The Egyptian masses won't play ally to Israel
As long as the masses in Egypt and in the entire Arab world continue seeing the images of tyranny and violence from the occupied territories, Israel will not be able to be accepted, even it is acceptable to a few regimes.
By Gideon Levy

On Friday night everything changed. It turned out that the Israeli intelligence estimates, which were recited ad nauseum by the court analysts, were again, shall we say, not the epitome of accuracy. The people of Egypt had their say, and had the nerve not to fall in line with Israeli wishes. A moment before Mubarak's fate is sealed, the time has come for drawing the Israeli conclusions.

...

The hypocritical and sanctimonious division of countries by the U.S. and the West between the "axis of evil" on the one hand, and the "moderates" on the other, has collapsed. If there is an axis of evil, then it includes all the non-democratic regimes, including the "moderates" and the "stable" and the "pro-Western." Today Egypt, tomorrow Palestine. Yesterday Tunis, tomorrow Gaza.

...

A second, no less important conclusion: Alliances with unpopular regimes can be torn up overnight. As long as the masses in Egypt and in the entire Arab world continue seeing the images of tyranny and violence from the occupied territories, Israel will not be able to be accepted, even it is acceptable to a few regimes.

The Egyptian regime became an ally of the Israeli occupation. The joint siege of Gaza is irrefutable proof of that. The Egyptian people didn't like it. They never liked the peace agreement with Israel, in which Israel committed itself to "respect the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people" but never kept its word. Instead, the people of Egypt got the scenes of Operation Cast Lead.

This is unconfirmed by other sources. At the same time, Al Jazeera Magazine is different from the Al Jazeera TV station that is located in Qatar and on whose reports we've all been relying on to get information about the Egyptian uprising.

Hospital says police shooting to kill

Sat, 29/01/2011 - 16:10

The death toll so far during Cairo's days of protests is much higher than reported in the news, according to doctors at one of Cairo's largest hospitals.

A resident doctor at the hospital who was assisting with surgeries yesterday told Al-Masry Al-Youm today that most of those admitted were not wounded, but dead. He estimated the number at more than 50.

The doctor said the wounds were from live bullets, not rubber bullets, and most appeared to be aimed at the head and heart, leading him to believe that orders to the riot police were to kill, not injure, the tens of thousands of protesters who took to the streets in anti-government protests this week.

"I rarely saw rubber bullet wounds," he said.

39. Beautiful picture, Catherina
I have a feeling the army is going to join the people very soon. I think it's only a matter of time now before the dictator leaves.

He simply cannot stay and I hope arrangements are being made to get him out of the country.

It's possible that elections can be moved up. I think they were supposed to be held in September, but once he's gone, a government will need to be put in place as quickly as possible.

The people have made all the right decisions so far. I trust them to decide who they want to lead them. Only they can do that.

56. Last entry on their live blog 10 am Egypt time:
10 am: Sunday is the start of the work week in Egypt, but as Al Jazeera's Dan Nolan reports, things in Cairo are "a long way from business as usual".

He says authorities are placing new military roadblocks on Galaa street in Cairo, blocking traffic from going through to the Corniche that runs along the Nile river. "Still a very tense scene with military everywhere," he says.

Later, he reports that witnesses have told Al Jazeera that the military has begun moving in on the streets of the Red Sea resort city of Sharm El Sheikh to protect tourist areas.

"What makes this so significant is that this is in the Sinai Peninsula. Under the terms of the Camp David accord, a peace treaty signed between Israel and Egypt, there was to be complete restrictions on any military ever entering the Sinai. It was always that the security in the Sinai could only ever be handled by police forces. This would indicate that police are no longer doing their job in the Sinai peninsula."

Friday, January 28, 2011
I received this message about Egypt
The source wants to stay anonymous but I cant evaluate the credibility of the source: "A source from within the Presidential Guard has claimed to my friends in Cairo that the army intends to end the protests on Sunday, by any means necessary even if it meant violence and bloodshed. Junta goons are causing chaos in Cairo to claim an unstable situation which will extend until Saturday. Then under the guise of bringing back order, they will "crush them with any amount of force needed!". The sources are unsure of the American role but believe the Americans will go with it."

this weekend. If CNN is allowed to stay and Al Jazeera is not, then that would be a very bad sign. Eg, I noticed the usual propaganda about 'looting' etc and mentions of the 'Islamic Brotherhood' and although it wasn't as bad as usual, I stopped watching as we had to get the 'other side' as always, as if there is one in this case.

I hope AJ can continue its broadcasts somehow. The world needs the truth without U.S. MSM spin.

Over 5,000 people there now. They are not afraid of the army at all. The army just ordered a fire truck to leave and the people cheered, fearful it was a water canon.

110. A guest on Al Jazeera about 30 minutes ago.
They seem to be off the air from here now. But the guest they had on said that he had spoken to some of the military officers and that they told him they will NOT prevent the protestors from doing what they want to do. The only thing they will do is interfere if there is a security threat.

Then, a report from the Square where protesters were gathering and saw a fire truck which they tried to stop, afraid it might be there to use water canons on the people.

They could not stop it, but then the Army Commander ordered the truck to leave and the people screamed and cheered and applauded the army. That was probably a 'security threat' to the people the officers were talking about.

Then someone reported hearing gun shots from the square, but apparently the people trust the army enough that they did not run away, but ran towards the army. It seems one of them had fired a shot in the air.

Another blogger told AJ that the army is NOT stopping them from entering the park, just making them use one entrance rather than all of them.

Probably again, for security reasons.

As for the police, they have disappeared, maybe joining the protestors in civilian clothes and doing a lot of the looting.

Seems the blogger was right, there are thousands in the square now. Also, saw on Al Jazeera about the fire truck and the army commander ordering it to go away to the cheers of the crowds. Shots fired in the air, but the people ran towards them, guest said, not afraid of the army.

131. I just heard a protester being interviewed over the phone from the square. POWERFUL
I was welling up. He sounded so hopeful, excited and proud. At one point he broke down when he said he was a doctor and there were too many wounded people the other day for him to help.

83. CNN is reporting (with apparent glee)
that the protesters are looting homes/businesses and violently removing items from the museum. These tactics are as old as uprisings themselves. I know, I've seen it in action. Send in the government-sponsored goons, posing as demonstrators, to start the violence, which is what the MSM reports. This makes the general populace nervous because they don't want to be associated with looters and those who commit acts of violence. You've now lost the support of Joe Average and the media. Problem solved.

As for the museum. Did we learn nothing from Iraq? Non-military personnel showed up with LISTS of specific items and the US military provided security for them.

I wish there was some way supportive Americans could let the demonstrators know we stand in solidarity with them and that the U.S. government and the people of the U.S. are two different entities.

off the air, and now the U.S. MSM can deliver the usual propaganda.

I hope it backfires on them completely.

87. There are Americans all over twitter making sure they know they're not alone
and doing everything possible to get the word out for them. They know they have a lot of support from ordinary people. I'm happy about that and grateful to all those who took the time.

Also some foreign nationals, Americans too, say they will refuse to be evacuated. They're staying in solidarity.

The U.S. Marines have a pair of warships -- the USS Kearsarge and the USS Ponce -- just hanging around the southern end of the Red Sea waiting to see if they're needed to rescue U.S. diplomats and citizens from Cairo. They're half of the Marines' 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, a mini-armada that recently dispatched 1,400 of its 2,000 Marines into Afghanistan. But they've got a "fair number" of helicopters, and Marines, still aboard. "They're not in the on-deck circle yet," a military official says. "They're kind of getting ready to come out of the dugout." Meetings in Washington through Friday night and into the weekend will determine if they're ordered to carry out a NEO -- a non-combat (but potentially dicey) evacuation operation.

126. I am not fucking surprised. All that funny stuff that went on at Al Jazeera last night
was to stop truth like that from coming out.

And there's some sort of technical tug of war going on because it kept abruptly cutting out from protest coverage. The last time it did, I sent Turborama an e-mail because they had some guy from the Brookings institute talking about the Muslim Brotherhood. I don't see Al Jazeera pulling away from protest coverage to interview an AEI affiliated neocon.

Big big stakes are at play here.

Shoot to kill? There must be a specialized crowd roaming the internet to keep us in the dark since their ploy of cutting Egypt from internet didn't pan out the way they hoped.

I'm so happy to see the day crew now.
