1. Good
Let's hope ElBaradei doesn't end up the way of Benazir Bhutto.

2. Well, obviously trying to keep Mubarek propped up is intenable at this point.
As someone (sorry, I didn't catch the name) said on NPR this morning, "Mubarek is a dead man walking."

5. Also on the Guardian liveblog:
A White House statement details President Obama's round of phone calls to foreign leaders in Turkey, Israel Saudi Arabia and the UK:

Today, he spoke to prime minister Cameron of the United Kingdom. During his calls, the president reiterated his focus on opposing violence and calling for restraint; supporting universal rights, including the right to peaceful assembly, association, and speech; and supporting an orderly transition to a government that is responsive to the aspirations of the Egyptian people.

The president asked each of the leaders that he spoke to for their assessment of the situation, and agreed to stay in close contact going forward.

6. But that does not rule out Egypt keeping the *new* government it just created
does it?
All those vague waffle words could mean anything.
A "transition" to the newly created government means Suliman steps up if Mubarack leaves=worse change.

Edited on Sun Jan-30-11 03:20 PM by upi402
But it doesn't look like the pople will go for that. But Suliman could go Tianenmen on their asses too. The Obama would waffle for sure and support that goon too - I'd bet my unemployment check on it!

Wouldn't want to make a mistake of being on the wrong side of People vs. Government or People vs. Corporations now would he? :sarcasm:

I know, it's all more of the same.

14. Angry Arab is cracking me up
US lies

Don't believe a word about how the US is clashing with Mubarak. Not one word. Much of the rhetoric of the US administration and its propaganda outlets like the NYT and Washington Post are lies layered with more lies. If the US wants Mubarak out, it would have made a public statement to that effect. I have a feeling that the US stance has in fact hardened against Mubarak's ouster in the wake of Obama's phone conversations with two experts on Egypt: Netanyahu and Saudi King.

22. You make it sound so easy. Our government has done much wrong
but publicly turning on an ally as soon as there is unrest wouldn't make it better, wouldn't help the protesters or the region or the future.
Obama and Clinton might look cooler if they told him to step down right away but what other country leader would then trust them?
They are not bloggers who can just express whatever they feel without taking a lot more into consideration. What they do behind the scenes can be more effective and do a lot more long term good

Obama and Mubarak
Let me predict: when Mubarak lifts off from Cairo airport, Obama will call on Mubarak to step down.

Clinton and Obama really heart Mubarak

"We do not want to send any message about backing forward or backing back,” she said. “What we’re trying to do is to help clear the air so that those who remain in power, starting with President Mubarak, with his new vice president, with the new prime minister, will begin a process of reaching out, of creating a dialogue that will bring in peaceful activists and representatives of civil society to, you know, plan a way forward that will meet the legitimate grievances of the Egyptian people."

And people were complaining yesterday that Obama hadn't taken a position, hence the reason I post the OP.
