Reports of Mubarak wealth at $40 billion, begs the question: |
|
Will the U.S. assist the Egyptian people with getting their money back? Public servants do not accumulate wealth measured in billions without stealing from the people.
I would hope that the U.S. government will freeze all assets held by Mubarak family members, and companies under their control, until a true accounting can occur.
That would be right thing to do, would it not?

3. Well those billions, if they exist, would go a long way towards |
|
actually improving the lives of Egyptians.
The U.S. government froze Iranian assets, surely they'll do the same with Mubarak assets.
If they do not, I'd be interested to hear how they rationalize not doing so.

15. The only reason the Iranian assets were frozen was because they took hostages. |
|
And seized American corporate property. No other reason. The Shah's assets were not frozen.

5. That's exactly what I was thinking - he pocketed a billion per year |
|
of OUR money, that was intended for the Egyptian people. Any financial crumbs left on the table after he and his family finished gorging, were probably spent on the military.

6. Of course it would be the right thing, but I don't think they'll even |
|
consider it until they know for certainty that he can't rise again, and that we don't need him any more.

14. America's morality IS flexible. It's been going on for years. The |
|
administrations are more concerned about making deals that serve us well than in making a statement or being true to our beliefs.
That's why, IMO, they're wishy-washy in their statements. They want to get the point across but don't want to alienate another power that we need on our side.
To think otherwise is setting ourselves up for disappointment. And believe me, I'm constantly disappointed anyway even though I get the politics at play (as far as a citizen can "get" it).
I hate it.

9. That's about it, isn't it? The US government would freeze the |
|
assets and then turn them over to GS to "manage in escrow", never to be seen again.
Oh, except as bonuses to GS partners.

12. A few billion here, a few billion there. We give and they pocket. |

I feel badly for the people of Egypt but they are doing a great job of keeping their protest non-violent. I hope it ends the way they want and that somehow the aid we give will finally make it to the people, not to Swiss bank accounts--or wherever dictators and the greedy stash their ill gotten gains.

13. My post in another thread: He will not step down. He will end up coming to the |
|
US, where he will greeted warmly. There will be talks behind closed doors, then a photo op on the White House lawn. Then he will receive another billion dollars, another Gulfstream aircraft and an apology for not delivering the jet to him.

|
We turned our backs when they let the Nazis accumulate wealth to spirit off to South America, what's the reason the world lets them get away with it?
Oh, I forgot, most of the world is led by despots who do exactly what Mubarak does.
