Flying the Confederate Flag is a declaration of war
The obvious racist undertones hide an important fact about the confederate flag. Even if you give someone the benefit of the doubt regarding the racist implications of flying the confederate flag it is a symbol of treasonous opposition to America. It is a declaration of war against America, and against the people of America.

So anyone who claims that their Confederate Flag isn't about racism is just letting you know that they support violent opposition to the government, Civil war, and sedition.

It is about showing support for violent opposition to America and support for the systemic human rights abuses faced by African Americans. If they ain't racist, than they are certainly treasonous.

The only part of the history and heritage of the South that it could represent is the civil war. As the battle flag, the only aspect of the civil war that it could represent is the violent opposition to the Union.

Many are racist, many are delusional, and many are tea baggin, violent, wanna be revolutionaries.

25.  According to my G-Grandfathers diary he fought for the State of Mississippi.

He and his five brothers fought at Vicksburg. They were Millers, Sawyers and Farmers. They were there to fight because "the Yankees were in Mississippi". After the war they returned to their trades. I have all 17 diaries, five uniforms and seven weapons from that time frame.
My family were craftsmen, small merchants, and farmers. Many of them still are. NON of them owned, rented, or borrowed slaves.

non-slave owning southerners wanted slaves, even if they didn't have them at the moment. That's why southerners who didn't own slaves fought for the Confederacy.

That's like saying every single soldier in the Wehrmacht wanted to see all the Jews dead.

Believe it or not, there very may well have been some Confederate soldiers who were just stepping up to defend their homeland against invasion. No slavery issue.

That flag is just as much a symbol of racism and treason as the Confederate battle flag.

Strange that you "respect" your Great grandpa by glorifying the worst thing he did in his life. At least I hope fighting for the confederacy was the worst thing he did.

44. Craftsmen, small merchants, and farmers. In others words, near the bottom of the socio-economic
scale.

Slaves were at the bottom. And as long as slavery existed, those craftsmen, small merchants and farmers would never be at the bottom themselves. That's a pretty powerful reason to fight for the preservation of slavery.

Slave owners were fighting for a concrete asset: property.

Non-slave owners were fighting for something much more powerful: an abstract idea - dignity and self worth.

Both supported slavery in their own way.

It is merely vestigial now, as a consequence of the Civil War.

45. The SPLC isn't made up of a bunch of ignorant people.
When I was a kid here in MS, I saw the flag displayed all the time. Today fewer and fewer people are willing to be seen with a rebel flag. Although class issues are part of the reason for this change, the main issue is consideration for black people and their feelings. Not too long ago, white people either weren't aware of just how deep the feelings were against the flag or they just didn't care how others felt. There are still people who don't get it and think the flag is just part of being Southern and there are some, as you have stated, who just want to aggravate black people. Either way, the biggest obstacle these people face is their own ignorance.

72. This exact issue was a major issue and embarassment at a high school a while back
Happened when we lived in MD...lifted from my journal

CSA Flag issue came up at a school near us a while back. Students were talking about seeing one in the parking lot. Staff scrambled, but there was nothing from the Dukes of Hazard to be found. There was a PA announcement about it, but no one spoke up. A few days later, parents called about it. Another parking lot search. Then one bright person pointed out that the CSA flag was NOT the 2ndCNJ. School staff bravely used the Internet and found what the real stars and bars were (1st CSA flag). They scouted the parking lot again and found the miscreant. They looked up the parking sticker and had the offender pulled from class to suspend him from school. Of course the student had no idea what the issue was. The sticker was actually the state flag of Georgia, affixed by his uncle several years before who had later sold the car to the student. It was not the 1st CSA flag. Neither the students, whining parents, or school staff figured it out, and when it was explained to them, it did not matter. Some parents pushed for expulsion of the student (for intimidation, not racism) just because of the accusation. The student was hassled and intimidated in the hallways. Several staff members made derogatory comments to him for embarrassing them and the school. The school attempted a gag order which failed. Word went out that the student and his parents were setting up to sue the school, several staff members and some of the whining parents for defamation. Eventually it calmed down, the student graduated (and went on to attend Georgia Tech).

Lessons Learned:
- The hysteria was foolish (as it always is)
- Facts don't matter if you have a good sound bite
- So called educated and educators are as as stupid and just as hysterical as the parental whiners.

80. If there was a single black person in Hazzard county...
I'm sure they would think it isn't just "never meanin' no harm".

I'll bet their absence has something to do with racist "Good old boys" running them out of town.
