Now that America can no longer pretend to have an American Dream, what country does? What country has the best <American> Dream?

1. None
China may have money, but that does not help you in the cemetery or the prison. India might, but India has too many loonies of all stripes, from Maoists to fascists. The dream may be dead, and no, that is Not a good thing.

28. Dubai ships out all their pee and poop in truck caravans daily
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7663883.stm

---The putrid problem is caused by the illegal dumping of untreated sewage in Dubai's inland storm drain network, as the city's rapid growth outstrips its infrastructure.

At Dubai's only sewage treatment plant there are long queues and serious delays.

Truck drivers who are paid by the lorry load to collect waste from the city's septic tanks wait for several hours to dispose of their foul cargo legally.

There simply is not the capacity to deal with all the human waste the city dwellers produce.

After dark some drivers are taking a shortcut and dumping their loads straight into manholes meant only for rainwater.

The result is raw sewage flowing directly into the once-clear blue sea of the Gulf - right next to prime swimming beaches.

This is bad news for a city which depends on the tourists who flock to its shores. ---

Or maybe China. The former has a leader who will provide a good quality of life for all of his subjects, and the latter has a booming economy that lifts hundreds of millions out of poverty and allows for a generous social safety net.

29. Here's the problem
Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 01:01 AM by jotsy
If it ain't all of it us, it ain't any of us.

Times have changed, whether for good or for bad and we are now a planetary public. The task at hand then is proving to the powers that be that we are not a Pavlovian people. The tools are as at hand to make the world a library with the global instant access technology's advances have afforded us. We can use them well or...

Be wary of where we draw the line from national pride to exceptionalism. Said dream requires some definition, given the fluidity of our governmental structure and the concrete like concept of individual rights being at the core of American principles, that dream is for each to draw as seen fit.

Who says? As a country we ride a 200 year long wave, mostly up, and because in the last 10 years it has become clear the moneychangers have been up to no good for quite a while longer than that. So now the pretending is over, I contend how we cope with the reality is soon to be discovered.

Edited because typos are just not are your mind when your hungry!

35. I just wondered where the American Dream illusion migrated, if anywhere.
Not that I was a believer in the dream, but others are/have been. It's a meme that's been part of America's culture for almost a century.

36. I am a believer though.
As a foreclosed on homeowner, I've lived what is said to be the dream and lost it after 15 years of thinking I achieved it. It was stolen by a big zombie bank and auctioned off to greedy locals who had no regard for anything but the money they stood to make. Those people will have their days, and they'll remember when they do that I told them their time in my moment would come, and I know it will. Unlike them, I'm not petty enough to facilitate my dream at the expense of someone else.

I contend we are too young a country to really possess a 'culture' so to speak. It's all borrowed cultural practices adopted with wave after wave of ethnic migration. We here in the U.S. are what I see as an ethnic fusion of the human condition. It's culturally rich to look back and honor the roots, but there's a forward too, I'd expect getting there to be perilous, especially if it's worthwhile.

My dream? To see a world that operates on the notion that our deepest calling in life is to nurture the young and care for the aged for as long as we are between the two. FDR identified as a right in 1944 what elites have undermined and well since as profitable commodities.

Against the opposition of an establishment candidate from the racial majority, who is backed by huge campaign contributions from large corporations?

Hmmmm. That's never happened in France. Or Norway. Or Australia. Let me continue to ponder......
