Beck going down, viewer/listenership slipping dramatically:
"Glenn Beck Limps into 2011 with Sinking Ratings"

Just about 52 weeks ago, Fox News' Glenn Beck was poised at the onset of an early 2010 ratings wave that propelled his daily show to news heights. Through late January and into early February 2010, Glenn Beck drew nearly three million viewers each night, making it at times the most-watched program on cable news.

<snip>

I've been monitoring Beck's ratings for some time and I cannot recall a streak of weeks like this where he's so consistently fallen below two million viewers. This is definitely new territory for Glenn Beck. I don't know if it's the utter sameness of the show that's driving former viewers away, but the air is clearly seeping out. Between November and the first three weeks of January, Glenn Beck has lost, on average, nearly 500,000 viewers.

<snip>

And yes, the decline comes in the wake of news that Beck's nationally syndicated radio show was recently yanked out of two of the countries largest markets, New York and Philadelphia.

22. Not to worry. Beck will come up with a new stunt.

First he billed himself as a white Martin Luther King.

Then, with all his accusations against supposed leftist "Nazis" he billed himself as, in effect, a gentile Jew.

Don't worry. He'll come up with a new stunt to get attention and controversy and when more people hate him he'll get the faithful to rally round him for being "persecuted."

I don't think he's done the Hispanic thing yet.

Or maybe he'll bill himself as an extraterrestrial......

He's defending ..... HUMANITY!!!!!!!!!!!

23. He certainly does come up with numerous variations of his persona...
Once, while reaching to change the station in the car after the local news, before I could get to the button, he made the statement, "Hey look, I'm just a clown." I put up with about 30 seconds of his whining, then went to NPR.

Worse than Beck though is the Savage Weiner...that man is just so filled with hate, I'm actually surprised he just doesn't spontaneously combust. A few years back, I was waiting for my son to get off of work, and I haphazardly tuned on to a station that had Savage on...he was blatantly calling for people to kill others, "...do a head shot, some people wear body armor." This was at about 11:15 pm CST...and I wondered who else in that parking lot was listening to this...maybe ready to do something terrible.

Maybe the Tuscon shooting were a wake up call to some of his viewers. The hate when too far.

Edited on Mon Jan-31-11 09:09 AM by rasputin1952
I only know of two people that listened to him "regularly", and both of them dropped him early last year, I don't know of anyone that admits to seeing his lunacy on TV...and I'm in Nebraska! You'd think he'd be popular out here, but most people thnk he's a loon with little more than a psychotic notion of his own self worth. The nazi allegations drove people away...and he has no answers for anything he brings up, it's all just drivel.

NY and Philly dropping his show had to be devastating for him...:D

6. Amazing how many of these wingnut radio yakkers are former DJ's
Who discovered how much money could be made telling hicks what they want to hear.

My guess is that Glenn Beck has no political philosophy at all and everything he says is calculated to keep his audience of yokels in a constant state of outrage at the people who (according to Beck) are responsible for the shitty state of their lives.

And corporate America is only to glad to fund his bullshit because it keeps the spotlight off them.

8. He regularly reminds his "people" that he is a recovering
substance abuser, (mainly alcohol I believe). He replaced that addiction for another, equally, (perhaps more so), delusional. He's not all that bright, he has delusions of grandeur and he has the means to get his "message" out. I'd love to see a professional opinion concerning the condition of his sanity.

From my layman's point of view, I call him batshit crazy, but there has to be a more precise diagnosis...:D

9. I think he's as sane as you or me
Well, he's probably more sane than me.

IMHO what he is is supremely cynical. He knows that he can make a ton of money by catering to the stupidity of the American people and he also knows that his bosses won't lift a finger to rein him in since they also rake in the cash from his ravings. And he performs a useful function for his corporate sponsors. He deflects anger from corporate fat cats. If he can keep the dumbass demographic pissed off at "liberals" and minorities, they won't recognize that it's the people who sponsor Beck who are really screwing them.

10. Kind of scares me if he's as "sane" as I am...
:D

He worships cash and notoriety, nothing else. He probably has some notion of "power", but he has none, (with the possible exception of motivating a very few to acts of violence, but collectively, people that easily motivated have IQ's that equate to a shoe size).

He is cynical, but like most cynical people, he can only see the point of view he wants to see. He's the proverbial "every silver lining has to have a cloud" type...the darker and more menacing the cloud, the happier he is.

13. thanks. similar could happen with limbaugh, hannity, beck radio if Left
stopped ignoring that component. it is the most important component of the right wing propaganda machine, the only medium capable of the kind of coordinated widespread repetition that can create and dominate.

RW radio dominates many blue areas because they have a well established, subsidized and protected monopoly. many local advertisers on limbaugh hannity beck stations (whether they have slots during the show or not) would look for alternatives if their communities gave them feedback and asked them WTF are you doing sponsoring these racist lying hatemongering global warming denying radio stations that have been wrong about everything and work only for big corporations and billionaires? most are only on those stations because their ad agencies put them on the loudest stations.

and why do so many of our universities and colleges continue to broadcast sports on these RW stations? they give community credibility to stations who do global warming denial (limbaugh does regular segments on global warming). where are the students and faculties of these 'institutions of higher education' on this?

21. You are so correct

Even though Limbaugh has suck ratings for the amount of airtime/area of coverage he gets, he's still there. I've been waiting for them to can his ass for years.

Broadcast Radio could still pull in listeners in droves if they had anything on besides the constant ObamaBashFest. I mean, turn on radio and that is ALL you hear anymore "Obama is bad,It's Obama's fault, Obama is destroying America."

Sane people just turn it off because they know it's propaganda and they don't want to hear it. Just as many, many Americans woke up and now equate Beck's hate speech with Christian Green's death. Fox cannot distance itself from her death no matter how hard it tries.

Nevertheless, ClearChannel and Fox must continue to broadcast the violent rhetoric as it is their entire schtick. Their Corporate Overlords don't care if they make any money or not, as long as they can continue to divide Americans, demonize Obama and spread the Corporate Message.

We need the Fairness Doctrine more than ever....not that it would impact cable, but it would definitely help show Limpballs et al as the ignorant, greedy lowlives they are.

26. I remember meeting an AP/PA of the Glen Beck show at a party
I straight up told her that working on that show makes her a bad person.

She agreed the show was absurd but her justification was "it's good for my career!"

I was dismayed by that response and just told her she was the most despicable sort of person and walked away in disgust.

Hopefully the trend continues and people realize how full of shit that clown is.

I suppose that you can only play "Chicken Little" so long before everybody gets worn out, particularly when none of what your ranting and railing about comes to pass. I'm also wondering how much more "juice" the Republicans can wring out of their cherished Tea Party. It's highly unlikely IMHO that they will remain an enduring part of our political landscape.

31. To an extent...
but we're talking about 1/6 of his "regular" viewers, in a relatively short period of time. If the trend keeps going, he'll be a net "loss" for sponsors and out he goes. He's already in hot water w/many sponsors, that's why he's hawking gold; (which is another scam...if gold was going to rise dramatically, why would the holders of said precious metal sell when the price was lower than it "will" be?)

Most people look for news, they've been bamboozled into thinking that the talking airheads are delivering such...if they read the NYT's International or National pages, they'd be surprised at what is happening around the world and country. The Days of Cronkite, Murrow, and other real journalists are long gone...it's all about attention getting headlines and no substance to the story.

We Americans are remarkably short-sighted and our collective attention span goes as far as the next "story". What's happening in Egypt has huge ramifications for the world, especially us and Israel...but the rest of the Muslim nations are watching this intently as well. We shall see what comes of this, but it will have a huge impact all over the area, to include Europe, the Middle East Africa and beyond. The US has a huge stake what happens there...it's a complex situation, and we're getting bits and pieces.

What we get is Beck and Limbaugh...telling us that PO is a non-citizen and a Socialist to boot. We're in sad shape, but fortunately, Beck is in sadder shape.

36. His success may rely on how many he influences towards violence rather than how many actually watch.
His job is to stir the pot with his incoherent nonsensical blather. Every time there is a threat that comes out of his influencing people and it gets a ton of air play here and there, he has done his job.
