The Egyptian army just took sides!
Edited on Mon Jan-31-11 02:17 PM by thewiseguy
Egyptian army recognizes the legitimacy of the demands of the demonstrators say that the armed forces would not resort to force against the people.

This is from Al Jazeera. Running as a breaking news banner on their Arabic website. Goodbye Mubarak.

Egypt's armed forces are aware of the "legitimate demands of the honest citizens," and will not use violence against the people, a spokesman said on Egyptian state television.

28. Obama gave a speech, a while ago...
He did not cause the revolution, nor did he convince the Army to stand with the citizens.

Pretty sure they did that on their own.

then you have the problem...not me. The Egyptian, Tunisian, and other ppls are perfectly capable of making their own decisions....your condescending attitude towards them is, frankly, disgusting.

to depart. Hopefully, he will realize that it's over. Hillary and Obama have probably worked out a plan...

17. Are we seeing the result of the army's positive relationship with the people?
Which we were told about from the very beginning of this uprising.

God forbid anyone not exactly like us be capable of determining anything for themselves.

48. Perhaps.
The crowd is calling for Mubarak's head, not the generals. The generals may just be unwilling to stick their necks out for him. There may be questions about the loyalty of the trigger pullers or some of the colonels/junior officers. I would imagine switching sides to protect the people would be a great promotion opportunity.

13. Don't take this too seriously but....
Most of the time these revolts get hijacked. The Middle East is crawling with dictatorships. Egypt is in north Africa. Mubarak is still in Cairo.

I'm kinda skeptical things will turn out the way you seem to think they will.

41. That is my fear,
that either the Army will take control or the other major player, the Muslim Brotherhood, who has political strength, weapons and troops will seize control. Either way the will of the people won't be realized with either a military dictatorship or a Theocracy.

15. They are walking a thin line...

Hard to doubt that the generals would prefer the status quo or something like it but if they come out for Mubarak they risk mutiny. So they are trying to finesse and hope to remain standing when the dust settles. The people would be better off without such 'friends'.

18. I think that's good news, at least for the Egyptiens. ..and it is THEIR country!
WE have no right to tell them what to do!

All we have given them are weapons. . .not food or freedom or peace!

And, unfortunately, the ONLY people who have benefited from all the billions $ in weapons is the defense industry!
So, once again, our tax dollars have been used, not to provide "aide" to other nations, but to subsidise the US defense industry!

Those billions would have been put a much better use, either right here in the U.S., or even in Egypt. . .to help them raise their quality of life. . .which might have prevented the need for this revolt!
