There appears to be widespread support for the Egyptian protesters here at DU.
Does anyone have an idea if this support is widespread or confined to liberals? Are most Americans even aware something is going on there?

1. One of my co-workers had no clue what was going on
and he appears to be liberal (though I don't know if politically active).

3. Very widespread among the twitter age. #Egypt trended top all over the world.
99% support from the large community of twitterers who hashed Egypt.

4. I think most people are inspired by pro-democracy, pro-freedom movements.
I know I am.

6. The thing to beware of is labels such as "pro democracy, pro freedom".
That is the same labeling that Bushies paste on their products.

9. I'm not going to beware it if it's true. Mubarak has been an unelected dictator for 3 decades.
What would you call it?

10. Don't mistake my caution for labels for support of Mubarak.

It seems as if you are.

Bush's invasion on Iraq was labeled pro democracy and pro freedom too.

Take care. :hi:

11. Yeah, and Bush was full of shit. You don't "free" people by pointing a gun at them.
Recent events illustrate perfectly the wisdom of the old Zen Koan about how do you get the goose out of the bottle without breaking the bottle-

You don't. The goose has to get itself out.

5. They have to be aware, it's on the cable news

This is like the OJ Simpson case, my friend. It's getting a lot of coverage. If the revolt does get Mubarak out, Sarah Palin is going to be able to place Cairo on the map.

Regarding support elsewhere, my take is the Israelis are scared, so the Israel lobby is in Washington urging a lot of caution. In other countries, it's also news. In Venezuela, Chavez called his buddies Gaddafi and Assad, and started cussing Obama for not standing by America's pet dictators when things get tough. I saw something simiilar on Fox News - it seems Chavez and Fox are onsides with the Israelis on this one.

I also saw in the DU Latin America board that Castro was insulting Obama for the way he was handling the Egypt crisis. But I think Castro must be getting nervous - if people around the world start rolling down dictator heads, his should be up very soon.

Got a lot of friends in their leadership?

14. I am Cuban, live with other Cubans
I can't tell you who we are, because we have family in Cuba, and they could be at risk. Nor will I tell you what my relation to Israel happens to be - I live in Venezuela, so I'm not about to start bragging about what I know or don't know, this is a pretty dangerous hobby as it is. i give you more details and the Cuban security service will show up at my door one of these days.

Mika, I have come to realize that when you and Ferrari start laughing, it's because you're out of arguments. Why not try to discuss things in a civil fashion? I have a lot of respect for you, even if we don't agree, and even donated to Operation Smile after I saw the little gizmo you had put in your signature. Why can't we all learn to get along?

You are laughable. No matter what argument is presented to you, you continue with your rather uninformed, puerile and fantastical dissections.

I get along fine. While laughing.

13. Nope, I was listening to NPR and other news sources
They say the israelis are going doodoo in their pants, want to stabilize Mubarak if possible, and put their people in gear in Washington to try to preserve whatever they can. Why don't you go read Haaretz? It's a pretty good left wing newspaper.

18. Yeah, Ha'aretz is usually a pretty reliable left-wing Israeli paper,
but they published a really stupid article yesterday urging support for Mubarak's government that earned them a lot of well-deserved criticism. Okay, not Ha'aretz itself for publishing the article, but Netanyahu's government for making those absurd statements in the first place.

From what I understand from Tikkun and other sources, the majority of American Jews support the Egyptian protesters. Interestingly, a lot of Israelis do also.

12. Israel is shitting in its pants
`Umar Sulayman is wanted...IN TEL AVIV

"Israeli officials have telephoned Hosni Mubarak's newly appointed vice president Omar Suleiman several times urging Egypt to maintain previous security coordination, Israeli media said." The occupying state is just incredible. The regime is about to collapse, and Israel is asking for "security coordination." It is not clear if they asked Sulayman for fries with that.

" The only people in Egypt who are committed to peace are the people in Mubarak’s inner circle, and if the next president is not one of them, we are going to be in trouble."
- Eli Shaked, former Israeli ambassador to Cairo, in the Yediot Aharonot newspaper

Ethan Bronner freaking out

"For the United States, Egypt is the keystone of its Middle East policy,” a senior official said. “For Israel, it’s the whole arch.”"

When New York Times or Israel say "Egypt" they mean, Mubarak of course. You read this article and you almost want to cry: it is like a story about parents who are about to lose a precious baby.

16. DU is a bubble all of it's own
just like the other site that shall not be named.

Most Americans really do not give a shit, but will wonder why their dang gas is more expensive. That is the honest answer.
