LETTER: Barton statement on
State of the Union

WASHINGTON: Rep. Joe Barton (R-Ennis/Arlington) released the following statement after attending President Obama’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday night:

“I thought that he gave a much more bipartisan speech this evening. I think he realizes there has been an election and there is now a Republican majority in the House of Representatives.

“He spoke out in favor of free trade agreements and job creation. The President – albeit in a backhanded way – even admitted his health care law could be improved upon. Republicans are definitely working on that. We have already begun the process of repealing an replacing ObamaCare.

“Mr. Obama also said it was time to invest in clean energy, but he included in that for the first time clean coal and natural gas. However, we need to also open up the deep gulf to find new reserves of oil. Our energy policy should be all inclusive.

“I do believe that the President missed the boat on talking about regulatory reform. I think the EPA and the FCC are stifling innovation instead of encouraging it.

“The President said he wanted a budget freeze of domestic discretionary funding - that is a first step, but we need to do more than that, we need to reduce spending. I would encourage the President to work with the Republicans in the House on a bold plan to shrink the size of the deficit and free up money for job creation.

“I think everyone realizes that there are major issues that need to be addressed and I do agree with the President that to do that we have to work in a bipartisan way, but I would put more emphasis on tightening our belts, budget reform, and reducing the deficit.

“We have heard many of these words before from President Obama, now let’s see if his actions match his rhetoric and he begins to change his policies.”
