An amazing thing happened in 1969. Niagara Falls went completly dry.
The river flow was cut off.



And then started again.

The idea behind stopping the falls was to determine if it would be feasible to remove the rubble at the base of the falls to enhance its beauty. (The falls are 170 feet high, but the 100 feet of rubble limits the fall to only 70 feet.) The decision was made to leave the rubble as it would have been too expensive to remove it.

2. I'm surprised they just found the photos
I lived in Buffalo at the time, and remember going to the falls to see them turned off. It was a big deal in the area at the time.

4. They should have taken advantage of the opportunity to clean up all those pieces of broken rock.
The place is just a mess. What will the neighbors think?
