Mubarak IS at Sharm El Sheik... no wonder the Israelis went yes, to the Egyptian troops. Those ARE elite, presidential guard, read loyal troops. No, nobody has said that... but if they are going to the SInai... it is not to quell anything but to keep somebody safe. You use the most loyal troops for that.

Dot connecting is always fun.

8. I'm somewhat familiar with the map of the ME, so I'm embarrassed that I made that mistake.
I might have to punish myself with a big dinner at a local ME restaurant.

11. Where are they deployed?

"JERUSALEM Jan 31 (Reuters) - Egypt has moved about 800 troops into the Sinai peninsula with Israel's consent to beef up security as protests aimed at toppling President Hosni Mubarak spread across Egypt, Israeli officials said on Monday.

Permission was granted in response to a request from Cairo, and the forces have been deployed around the southern Sinai resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, one official said. Two other officials confirmed that Israel had granted such a request."

6. That is What the Presidential Guard is For
I doubt that Mubarak would let the Army anywhere near him. Remember what happened to his predecessor.
He has a Presidential Guard (22000 strong) to protect him.
