DREAM Act fails, 55-42
Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 11:33 AM by Ruby the Liberal
Cloture vote opposed by Hagin, Snowe, Collins, Brown and all the usual suspects. Murkowski (sp?) did vote aye.

Without identifying anyone, they said several Dems voted no, several Repubs voted yes.

48. And, I presume, Pryor, Testor, Nelson, Baucus and Hagan.
It failed because of these Democrats' votes.
-----------------------------------------------

Three Republicans supported the bill today: Dick Lugar of Indiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Robert Bennett of Utah. But five Democrats voted against it: Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Jon Tester of Montana, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Max Baucus of Montana and Kay Hagan of North Carolina.

No human compassion.

Both of these votes are in support of basic human rights. Are we really in America?

6. Clouture fails, despit the presence of a majority for the legislation....
...you must always phrase it this way.

To do otherwise reinforces the myth of a 60-vote Senate.

The legislation commands a majority.

21. I don't think it will have much effect
The Republicans are already in the tank with the Hispanic vote. They really can't fall a whole lot further. I'd say the reverse is more true -- the Dems are at risk of losing key working-class white votes if they are perceived as sympathizing too much with illegal immigrants. Right now, a couple points of white votes is worth far more than a couple points of Hispanic votes. Despite demographic trends, that will still be the case decades from now, though the gap will slowly narrow over time.

24. Statistically it's similar to the Civil Rights legislation. Democrats lost some white voters (which
are a big bloc of votes) while gaining a lot of minority votes (though they were a smaller bloc).

33. True, but it should also be remembered
that after 1964 Democrats didn't win a WH election again until 1976, when they had additional help from the Watergate legacy, so in the short term it certainly wasn't a game-changer, at least on the Presidential level. Of course the minority share of the vote was lower then too.

Africans Americans are already 'maxed out' on the Dem side and in any case, attitudes in that community towards pro-immigrant legislation are mixed, despite how the CBC votes in Congress. My sense is that the breakdown of the Hispanic vote won't move all that much in coming decades -- what is going to change is that the total Hispanic share of the electorate will rise -- so even if the breakdown stays approximately the same, over time it will mean more votes for Dems as the Hispanic share of the population rises. But that is going to be a long, slow process.

30. correct
and I think the failed effort will hurt us more in the near term. I use for example my Senator Bob Casey Jr.(D-PA), up for reelection in 2012 and IF the economy is still in the shit can the pukes will use his support for DREAM against him, they will make him defend this and in much of PA this will hurt him. Not saying it's right, just saying.... I'm actually surprised he voted yes, pleased, surprised but not sure it will help him next election.

41. I don't know, sometimes you should just do it when it's right, you know?
I think that's why a lot of people here are made, we put our time and energy in '08 towards people who promised to do the right thing for the people. Voting for or against something because it will keep you in office isn't the right thing (although I think it will work in your favor because the same people who wore out sneakers and voices in '08 will come back for you and do it again in the future, you know what I mean?)

17. Turncoat list from MSNBC
Democratic backers of the legislation fell short of the 60 votes to move the DREAM Act legislation forward. Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Jon Tester of Montana, Max Baucus of Montana, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, and Ben Nelson of Nebraska voted against bringing the bill to the floor;

And thanks to: Republican Sens. Richard Lugar, Lisa Murkowski, and Robert Bennett voted for it.

26. DREAM ACT is for young people who were brought here as children
Imagine if you were told you had to go 'home' to a place you never really knew, since your parents had brought you here with them when you were, say, 2 years old? How fucked up would that be?

Yes I think the age in the bill is 15 or 16. I think that could've been lowered and still keep the spirit of the bill, but I don't think that compromise would have gotten any votes anyway.

27. It was to reward children brought to the US before age 16 and went
to school here and graduated a chance at citizenship and college.

Requirements:

■Must have entered the United States before the age of 16 (i.e. 15 and younger)
■Must have been present in the United States for at least five (5) consecutive years prior to enactment of the bill
■Must have graduated from a United States high school, or have obtained a GED, or have been accepted into an institution of higher education (i.e. college/university)
■Must be between the ages of 12 and 35 at the time of application
■Must have good moral character

If one doesn't care about that sort of thing, I guess it doesn't matter.

47. You left a few of the requirements out though...
Does not grant legal immigrant status to anyone for at least 2 years. Previous versions of the DREAM Act would have immediately granted legal immigrant status to individuals who met the bill’s requirements. Under S. 3992, an individual could obtain “conditional nonimmigrant” status if he proves that he meets the age (currently 29 or under and arrived in the U.S. at 15 or under) and residency requirements (5 years or more) and:
Has graduated from an American high school or obtained a GED;
Has been a person of “good moral character,” as determined by the Department of Homeland Security, from the date the individual initially entered the U.S. (previous versions of the DREAM Act only required an individual to be a person of good moral character from the date of the bill’s enactment);
Submits biometric information;
Undergoes security and law-enforcement background checks;
Undergoes a medical examination
; and
Registers for the Selective Service

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DREAM_Act#2010

The Act, as written, still has many roadblocks in it and would still be hard to get approved by far more than it helps....

YMMV
