GOP lawmaker wants women seeking abortion to see ultrasounds

By Tessa Muggeridge, Cronkite News Service East Valley Tribune

A Republican lawmaker wants to require women seeking abortions to have an ultrasound and listen to the heartbeat of the fetus at least one hour before the procedure, saying it would give them the necessary information to make an informed decision.

HB 2416, a wide-ranging bill sponsored by Rep. Kimberly Yee, R-Phoenix, would mandate that doctors point out the fetus’ various extremities, describe its position and offer a picture of the ultrasound to the woman. It would also ban phone or video consultations with doctors before abortions.

“Choosing an abortion is a decision that’s wrought with consequences, both physical and emotional,” Yee said. “We in this community need to make sure the decision can be made fully informed.”

1. another woman-hating, pro-forced birther who thinks women are totally and completely stupid, and
have to be told what is going on in their bodies.

a great big FU to him, and all the other low-life idiots who want to control women.

19. The legislator is a woman, not a man. Which makes it even worse IMO.

2. Why not have their friends and family throw them a baby shower first too??
ha ha, just kidding

I don't mind them having the option to see an ultrasound but they shouldn't be forcing them to do anything.

5. they always have the option of an ultrasound...
it doesn't take legislation.

I suspect the baby shower idea may be next on their agenda.

24. Republican woman syndrome - I'm special, worthy of doing men's work
So it's OK if I enjoy the benefits that feminism gives me - choices about when and if to have a child, childcare if I do have a child and work long hours, a decent paycheck.

But all the rest of you women need to remember your places.

8. Ad who is going to pay for the ultra sound?
If she decides not to abort the insurance company pays? She decides to abort, it does not pay? Oh wait, she probably doesn't have insurance in the first place.

14. It is not their job to legislate morality!
There should be a line drawn for those who are obsessed with the reproductive rights of others while ignoring the general welfare of the people.

We are entertaining and enabling a form of pathology that suggests some good therapy, not political legitimacy.

Then why do we have legislation to help the poor? Why do we want everybody to have health care?

15. Politicians should be forced (by law) to watch a one-hour film about
the lives of women who recognize they cannot take care of another baby, or cannot continue to work the current job while pregnant, or cannot otherwise provide decently for another child at this time --

The politicians should be forced to listen to the heartbeats of the children the woman already has, and be forced to study her financial situation and any other stressful domestic circumstances (abusive husband, overcrowded extended household, etc), so the politician can be "fully-informed" and aware that his decision is fraught with the consequences ("physical and emotional") of forcing a child into leading a miserable existence.

I question who it is that is not "fully informed" in this situation.
I question who it is that is not understanding both sides of "a decision wrought (sic) with consequences."

It's just stunning that some politicians think women don't understand what "pregnant" means.

It means total commitment (for 18 years or so) of all of a woman's physical, emotional and financial resources, and I don't know how to make an ultrasound of that, and I don't know how to force politicians to watch it.

17. Oh please this program is as cheap as forcing everyone on welfare
to take drug tests. Remember Republicans main solution to health care is to eliminate all the unnecessary procedures and over billing. Yeah ultrasounds and drug testing, dirt cheap solution that will save thousands and put millions back to work.

20. So let's show pregnant women videos of C-sections and episiotomies - along with deformed fetuses.
Choosing to bear a child is a decision that wrought with consequences, both physical and emotional, and we in this community need to make sure that the decision can be made fully informed. Right?

23. Insulting, yes. These poor silly creatures can't possibly know what's going on.
The choices they make concerning their lives and bodies can be totally changed if we just show them an ultrasound. Or tell them that abortion ends a pregnancy...

30. Another rethug who believes in less government...except when it comes to your personal life
This is the Great Republican Con, the notion that rethugs are all about "less government". Sure, except when it comes to how you want to live your PERSONAL life. Then, it's all about government being up in your business. Whether it's abortion, gay marriage, medical marijuana, etc - you can be sure that the GOP wants to dictate what you can and cannot do.
