We owe the DADT repeal to bi-partisanship, moderation, and the big tent
This victory would not have been achieved without bi-partisanship and moderation. There is a difference bewteen Liebermam, Snowe, Collins, Brown and hard right Tea Party types.

1. And We'll Owe Billions Added To The Deficit And The Eventual Run On SS
To that same bi-partisanship too. Also worked to kill the dream act.

2. There is no doubt that there is a bit too much homophobia on the other side; however,
this is now a done deal. Furthermore, it reinforces the wisdom of Obama's restraint with respect doing it via executive order. For had he pursued that course of action, DADT could have simply been undone via the same process. Now, it will forever be the law of the land.

On the other hand, I'm inclined to agree with the Democrats who did not vote for the dream act. The problems of American citizens should be solved prior to attempting to solve the problems of Mexican citizens.

4. It Is Almost A Done Deal
What is being missed is that the military will be given time to implement it and then the joint chiefs have to sign off on it for it to become military policy.

14. You are correct, this will not be fully implemented tomorrow.
But, Joint Chiefs are duty bound to move the process forward.

5. even if that 'Mexican citizen' was brought here before they were 2?
some of these kids have NO choice and are truly left without a country.

I think a compromise could have been made to lower the age, but I think if any compromise would have worked it would've been tried. The people who oppose the DREAM act don't care when a child was brought here and if that person who's now a young adult has ANY option or not. 'No child left behind' - unless it's a Mexican.

16. Please don't misunderstand; I feel for the plight of children who are caught in the middle.
However, Americans are facing some very serious problems right now, and those problems must be dealt with first.

The US is broke, we simply can no longer do everything for everybody.

3. Try to focus on the repeal instead of spinning something good
into something bad. Really, this negativity is a bore.

9. That would be fine but the OP is spinning a largely negative situation into a positive.
The truth is fine.

The OP also assumes toothpaste can be put back in the tube. A few years of open service and the issue would be dead as a doornail. There is no substantial public support for the ban, the TeaPubliKlans were using it to rile up their deadend base and are not serious about it because it isn't a profit determiner.

8. We owe DADT repeal to the outspoken, loudmouthed, troublemakers who made the politicians act.

10. why to loud mouths that take forever to get on board always get the credit
while all the politicians that were always correct never get any love. Fuck the asshats that held it up with their lack of guts. This should of passed months ago but these wimps couldn't stick their neck out until they thought it was politically safe. Bah to the occasional moralists.

11. Unrec - until the military code is changed - repeal of DADT takes us
Back to before DADT.

Right now the military is not using DADT to dismiss service people.

We could have put additional pressure on the senate had Obama signed the executive
Order and he and gates continued to pressure senators to end DADT.

This was a rather tortured road to a positive end.

15. We owe this to the servicemembers who completed the Survey
The military big wigs and our govt. couldn't go against their views although they tried REALLY hard (didn't they re-send the survey a couple times? I got the feeling the way the re-sends were worded that the people who sent the surveys out couldn't believe that the results were so pro "let people serve who want to serve".

So, after making such a fuss over the survey and the results coming back so clearly for the repeal of DADT, they pretty much had to all get together an make it happen. Don't you think? That's the sense I got from it all.

So, thank you servicemembers. Although you still have those who are closed-minded haters, the majority felt that anyone who wants to serve should serve and shouldn't have to hide in a closet.
