Can you see DADT repeal being an issue in the 2012 GOP primaries? |
|
Remember, in Iowa and South Carolina (not so much New Hampshire) it's all fundamentalist Christians for the caucus and the primary.
I could see all of the candidates trying to curry favor with the fundy crowd by promising to reinstate DADT.

1. Advocating such would be political suicide. It's a different animal than HCR. nt |

6. They said a lot of shit in the 2008 primary that would be political suicide normally. |
|
But the rules don't apply to Republicans talking to their base.

7. No, the "Tea Party" cannot bring it up. |
|
Not as such... they would then cease to be the "Tea Party." But perhaps we can destroy the "Tea Party" with so-called social issues, bringing libertarian-minded people back to the Democrats.

9. Not really. It was a throw away wedge issue to keep the morons rilled up. |
|
There may be some of the more fundie minded that will try to roll it over to DOMA and use it as an illustration of how much danger "the sanctity of marriage" is in or a lil push to deny benefits.

12. It will be used to fire up the republican base (Thune, Palin, Gingrich, Huckabee will use it), but |
|
in the general, it won't carry any weight. Overall, the American people have moved past the bigotry of the republican base.

14. I doubt it. Any politician even if that is their personal view will ... |
|
be conscious of how it will play out in general election. They don't want to "trap" themselves over a minor issue.

By the time we get to 2012, except for a few bumps (which will be "Xtian" soldiers and "Xtian" leaders in the non-military world working together to try and push some story about how the "Xtian" soldiers' rights were trampled on), the DADT repeal will have gone so smoothly that it won't be on anyone's minds or be seen as worth the effort.
