Manchin
Being from the West Coast, I knew very little of Joe Manchin. I now know enough to want him gone.

Today he bailed on 2 very important votes to attend a family Christmas Party. In stark contrast, Ron Wyden (D-OR) attended the votes even though he was scheduled for pre-op tests for his Cancer Surgery on Monday.

From Wiki I see that Manchin holds the following views:

"He opposes abortion, gun control, same-sex marriage, and the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Pray tell, what Democratic views does this POS hold dear?

His term is up in 2 years. Is there an actual Democrat that can challenge him? If we can find one, I'll throw all my resources to getting him/her elected.

Can we discuss this sensibly - please.

2. After losing Kennedy's seat I could not bear the thought of losing Byrd's
And in this climate, Manchin is probably the best we can expect out of West Virginia.

3. Unfortunately, this is West Virginia we're talking about (with Obama in the low 30s).

The only reason we could keep the seat in 2010 is because Manchin had a 70%+ approval rating. Otherwise we would have easily lost it.

However, his votes won't really matter over the next 6 years. The Republicans will either control the House or the Senate, which means nothing moves unless it has bipartisan support anyway (making the vote count somewhat irrelevant). The one thing where his votes will matter on is judges, and he will likely vote with Democrats on those.

4. He was the lone Dem to vote against DADT/National Defense Authorization Cloture
10 days or so ago.

One wonders what Democratic bona fides this man even has.

Ugh.

5. Is there an actual Democrat that can challenge him?
There wasn't before, and I seriously doubt there will be in two years, but if I run across one, I'll let you know.

Many of my progressive friends voted for the Mountain Party candidate over Joe, even though I urged them not to, and personally voted for Manchin myself. But I don't know if Jessie Johnson would run as a Dem, and I don't know if the Democrats in this state would have him if he did.

Other than that, I've got nothing at the moment.

6. He is the perfect example of how our Senate is run by the most unqualified morons
Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 06:08 PM by t0dd
I'm surprised he didn't create an ad of him shooting a gay person like he did to demonstrate his opposition to the health insurance bill. He is a shameful opportunist.

8. If during the Democratic primary a more liberal Dem wins that is fine
If that doesn't happen Manchin's future votes in the Senate will be greatly appreciated over some crazed Republican teabagger on some other issues that may also mean a lot to many of us.

That is how politics has always worked.

If you are looking for perfection I suggest you look for another hobby.

9. You want to replace him with the GOP nominee? It is W. Virginia who votes for their representative
Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 06:15 PM by stray cat
The constitution demands that the state gets to elect their representatives and not DU

10. Your reading comprehension skills seem a little lacking.
I asked why a true 'Democrat' could not be found to replace him, how the hell did you twist that to read GOP? With his stance on the following issues:

"He opposes abortion, gun control, same-sex marriage, and the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

How does he differ from the GOP nominee?

And, you are correct, WV gets to vote for their Senator. However, The Senate gets to make decisions for the Country - not just their State - that makes it my business. My question was, why can't we (the Democratic Party) get them a better Democratic candidate?
