President Obama says tax cut deal proves Republican Party is "looking out for the American people"
Edited on Mon Dec-13-10 10:01 PM by Better Believe It

Tax cut bill easily clears Senate hurdle
Obama hails Senate action, urges House to follow quickly
msnbc.com news services
December 13, 2010

Even before the vote was complete, President Barack Obama said the show of support "proves that both parties can in fact work together to grow our economy and look out for the American people."

(Well, since the Republican party is also looking out for the interests of the American people should we vote for their candidates President Obama? And which American people are you talking about? BBI)

Senate passage, expected within a day or two, would set up a final showdown in the House between Obama and liberals in his own party who want the White House to scale back the billions the bill includes in relief ticketed for the rich.

In his remarks, the president gave no indication he was willing to accept further changes to the measure he negotiated with senior Republicans.

"I understand those concerns," he said of the objections from some of his usual allies in Congress. "I share some of them. But that's the nature of compromise, sacrificing something that each of us cares about."

(Right .... letting the Republicans open the attack on our Social Security in return for some unemployment compensation funds. Nice trade-off and "compromise"! BBI)

Their pensions secure, their health care bought and paid for, their kids in swanky colleges, (no nasty wars for their children), traveling the world at tax payer expense, no bread lines, no shitty schools, no food stamps and premo colleges and jobs for their spawn.

ALL of it at tax payer expense.

"I understand those concerns," Obama tells us, "I share some of them. But that's the nature of compromise, sacrificing something that each of us cares about."

Too bad the only sacrifice going on is by ANYONE but the wealthy, the corporations or these politicians who stand around and cry on National TV. Nauseating.

54. how do repukes care about most of the american people?
As Little Boots stated to his wealthy audience "you're my base." They believe in deregulation over the well being and safety of the populace they believe in profit over life; they don't believe in labor or safe working conditions; they could care less if the plebes are starving, homeless (oh, they're lazy that's why there in that predicament); and most would sell us all out for some foreign corporation in a heartbeat.

So, tell me how the repuke party cares about the people.

31. The press misquoted him? No. This is what he said:

Even before the vote was complete, President Barack Obama said the show of support "proves that both parties can in fact work together to grow our economy and look out for the American people."

So in President Obama's mind, both parties, the Republican Party and the Dems, are working together to improve the economy and are looking out for the American people.

When did that happen?

I don't think so!

Labor's Consumer Price Index (CPI) has not risen since the last cost-of-living adjustment was determined in 2008. As a result, your benefits will not increase in 2011." Same as they didn't in 2010. Yeah, right, your cost of hasn't gone up one red cent in the last two years, huh?

Oh, and by the way, you know that $250 the administration said they were for before they decided the republicans were right and now are against it? Well, you're not getting that either -nor are disabled veterans.

Come on, "American People", let's have an "adult conversation" about all this good stuff coming your way.

Edited on Tue Dec-14-10 05:49 AM by HughBeaumont
THAT'S the problem with America. It's what's behind
* our crap voting choices (Republican, Arch-Right Wing Asshole, Symbolic "Principle" Vote),
* our crap product choices (China, Malaysia, Taiwan or higher cost USA stuff),
* our crap energy "Choice" (the anvil oil or pay-through-the-nose for something cleaner),
* our semi-crap media choice (Widespread and influential Corporate McOpinion Pravda, Euro news or the internet; the first option, by and large, dictating and influencing problem #1),
* our crap health care choice (Bankrupted by Death Panel or get sick 'n' DIE) and
* our crap life choice (Work until sheet-gurneyed in a plantation-based model or starve to death, sometimes both).

Who fixes THAT? Who even subsides it?

213. Hmmm, maybe you (the US) should have thought about that, when you decided...
...to create a model of prosperity that absolutely depends on:

  1. The continuous appropriation of land and resources controlled by others. - Yes that is a major part of Colonialism, but it is also a practice the US has continued long past the colonial era AND unto the point where that appropriation has to become canibalistic to meet the demands of business; cf: frost mittigation for Florida strawberries; mountaintop removal for coal; fracking for gas; GOM deadzones for Kansas corn.
  2. An enormous underclass of subsistence workers, first at home then more lately abroad;
  3. A national bigotry entirely at odds with the national "mission statement";
  4. Placing profit before service or even environmental (and not just in the sense of natural nature) integrity;
  5. Moving every possible "incidental cost" off the ballance books of those incuring them;
  6. The continuous deferral of current costs into the future.

215. How about if he'd just reply to the right with one fucking tenth of the rhetoric...
...he used to game (there is not other word) the support of the left in his campaigning.

Every single progressive (and I'm being very generous with the word) initiative has begun its 'life' as with absolute minimum parameters necessary to effect a positive result.

AND THEN

99% of all defence is directed towards telling the shaftees why it was necessary to a) completely gut the initiative, and b) give enormous concessions to oponents.

"coked to the gills" might describe your own little missive.

Forget their words for a moment. Suspend your own beliefs. Simply look at the actions and their outcomes. Not in isolation, but as part of a greater whole. Work out for yourself who is benefiting and who is getting the shaft. Look at the results and only then compare them to the words being uttered by your representatives. Apart from a tiny handful, from the President down, they are pretty much all lying through their teeth.

...to the words that he spoke to get elected.

I am saying that when there is a basic dichotomy between what is offered and what is given, between what is said and what is done, then it best behooves each and every one of us to close our ears to false promises and open our eyes to what is actually going on around us.

This "word salad" you disparage is the result of a thousand individuals reporting what they see. And we're all going to see something different, but the common threads we are seeing are twining into rather damning cables. (Pun noted and intended.)

What great kabuki theatre. The ratings will go through the roof! Imagine how fun the debates will be! Man, he's gonna cream her! She'll make us all fall in love with him again! Palin will make the professional, purist whiny left tremble with fear, and they'll be so relieved when President Obama wins in a landslide. We win again! Then he'll really have a mandate for change!

I heard David Sirota say today that the President's team is gearing up for a billion dollar campaign. It's so simple - "You don't want President Palin, do you?" Now this is master chess. But somehow I don't see myself volunteering too much this time...

101. Nobody is sacrificing anything for "the economy"
and certainly not for the deficit. We just tacked everyone's Christmas list onto a single bill and busted out the credit card.

The reason why we're fighting mad about the 2-percenters getting a bulk of the tax cuts is because they're the ones who are thriving in this recession and have made ZERO sacrifices.

They keep saying this plan will be good for the economy, but they never explain HOW. That's because it will do little if anything for the economy, unless you believe that the 2-percenters will hold true to their terms of blackmail and start hiring again. But they've already indicated that they're not comfortable doing that until their tax cuts become permanent - even though there's nothing to indicate that personal income taxes have ANYTHING to do with employment whatsoever. In fact, if you look at the trends, the higher the upper incomes are taxed, the lower unemployment tends to be.

103. Hedges: Every Act of Rebellion Helps Tear Down Our Corrupt System
We, like those who opposed the long night of communism, no longer have any mechanisms within the formal structures of power that will protect or advance our rights. We too have undergone a coup d’état carried out not by the stone-faced leaders of a monolithic Communist Party but by the corporate state. We too have our designated pariahs, whether Ralph Nader or Noam Chomksy, and huge black holes of state-sponsored historical amnesia to make us ignore the militant movements, rebels and radical ideas that advanced our democracy. We opened up our society to ordinary people not because we deified the wisdom of the Founding Fathers or the sanctity of the Constitution. We opened it up because of communist, socialist and anarchist leaders like Big Bill Haywood and his militant unionists in the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

We may feel, in the face of the ruthless corporate destruction of our nation, our culture, and our ecosystem, powerless and weak. But we are not. We have a power that terrifies the corporate state. Any act of rebellion, no matter how few people show up or how heavily it is censored by a media that caters to the needs and profits of corporations, chips away at corporate power. Any act of rebellion keeps alive the embers for larger movements that follow us. It passes on another narrative. It will, as the rot of the state consumes itself, attract wider and wider numbers. Perhaps this will not happen in our lifetimes. But if we persist we will keep this possibility alive. If we do not, it will die.

All energy directed toward reforming political and state structures is useless. All efforts to push through a “progressive” agenda within the corridors of power are naive. Trust in the reformation of our corporate state reflects a failure to recognize that those who govern, including Barack Obama, are as deaf to public demands and suffering as those in the old Communist regimes. We cannot rely on any systems of power, including the pillars of the liberal establishment—the press, liberal religious institutions, universities, labor, culture and the Democratic Party. They have been weakened to the point of anemia or work directly for the corporations that dominate our existence. We can rely now on only ourselves, on each other.

but I new this would happen, and the bad thing he is not done yet. The Korean trade deal, fucking up Social Security, endless wars, going after Assange, shutting down the free press and speech. What will be next? no net neutrality? He better look out because these great Americans he is talking about, hate him real bad. They will totally shut down anything he wants to from January on,and talk about investigations. He better hang on to his ass because they will be coming after that candy real soon! We are fucked but I think he is going to find out what that is about soon enough.

If Obama thinks this is going to stimulate the economy with jobs he's insane. The republicans want him to fail. They are setting him up big time. They aren't going to create jobs and this bill is going to cost him the 2012 election.

I've been out Christmas shopping and I've been making a point to look at everything I touch to see where it made. It's ALL made in China and India. The only economy this new bill is going to boost is China's and India's economy. It's not going to do jack shit for ours and I'm afraid he is going to pay dearly for it.
