Students and supporters of The Dream Act react to today's vote -pics

Students, some wearing graduation caps and gowns, cry after watching from the senate gallery as opponents block passage of the "Dream Act" at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, December 18, 2010. The measure would have provided a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children.

WASHINGTON - DECEMBER 18: Supporters of the DREAM Act leave after watching the bill be voted down on Capitol Hill December 18, 2010 in Washington, DC. The Senate was not able to get a 60 vote super majority to pass cloture on the bill that would grant amnesty to some children of illegal immigrants.

Undocumented college student Jorge Herrera, 18, right, of Carson, Calif. , rallies with students and Dream Act supporters in Los Angeles, Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010. The Dream Act, which failed to move on in the Senate, would have given provisional legal status to illegal immigrants brought to the country as children.

UCLA student Jose Ortiz, 20, reacts as the Dream Act fails to move forward in the Senate during televised coverage of proceedings at the UCLA Downtown Labor Center in Los Angeles, Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010. Immigrant advocates viewed the measure as a step toward providing a path to legal status for up to 12 million illegal immigrants by focusing on the most sympathetic among them first. Critics called it a back-door grant of amnesty that would encourage more illegal immigration.

this is not a "we" at all.

I'm more like the other 50 that votes "yea" rather than the 5 that votes "nay". No fucking way do I own anything those naysayers did.

13. With what's coming in the house in January I bet this is the end of it, I want to know why Repukes
hate children? Why do they hate the military?

Presumably some of these kids would have joined the military and I'm sure would have served admirably, additionally those who chose to go to college, I'm sure they would have worked hard and thrived given what was on the line. now they will never have the chance and we will be the worse off for it? Whether these kids stay underground or resort to a life of crime for lack of citizenry, we have no idea, but this is a travesty to kids who have done nothing wrong and have only known THIS Country as THEIR Country, and now we've let them down...

7. This hurts my heart--deeply
My son's father came to the US as a small child and as an illegal immigrant. This was the only country that he knew, and wanted to give back all of the bounty that was afforded to him. He thankfully was given citizenship under the amnesty program of the 1980's. He has lived most of his life as a union member and a strong citizen.

Those pictures just hurt my heart more than most folks can know. These are my people, even if I am a spoiled white girl from the suburbs. This is family. This is heartbreaking.

To them only Whites are real Americans and once we cease being a majority it's not "America" any more. Fuckers.

16. So sad....
This is just awful. Unless we are Native American Indians, our ancestors came here as immigrants. These kids were born in America or came with their parents as children - to deny them rights as an American is horrendous.

My wish is that the older generation of hate-filled, so called "Christian" conservatives will fade away (they are getting old after all....) and the generation of NOW will take our country in the direction of progress, change and evolution. Our children are our hope, we must teach them!

Both my children (30 and 29) are democrats, and both of my grandchildren (10 & 6) learn every single day about democracy from ME. We took them to vote with us, I talk to them about the country and I teach them. My grandchildren think that the republicans are "crazy" - and those are their thoughts and opinions from watching them with me on the news!!! 10 and 6 years old and more wise than you can imagine.

My grandson's father's family are conservative, so called "Christian" republicans who attempt to fill his head with lies such as "President Obama kills babies". When he used to come home to tell me this garbage I would immediately take him to the internet and we would search for the truth together. Now - they still try and my grandson says "grandma, I know that this stuff isn't true, I just don't say anything because I don't want to hurt their feelings."

It is up to us to educate the generation who will move our country forward because it sure doesn't look like we are getting the job done.

Annette

I am trying to hold back the tears. I hope that this back fires on every single elected official that voted against the dream act. Look at those poor kids. I just do not understand why some of them hate the children.

29. Well, they can all go right back to...
oh, wait. They grew up here. There's no other country to send them back to - this IS their country.

So it's best to punish their parents by making these kids' lives more difficult and more miserable.

Great idea. I'm sure those who defeated it are proud of themselves. I'm sure they asked themselves WWJD, no?

I was sadder yesterday about the defeat of the Dream Act than I was happy about DADT.

31. As a white middle aged male, all I can say is
Fuck the right wing red neck pieces of dog crap who voted against the DREAM act. The young people whose lives are affected are more patriotic and more American than they ever will be. Most of the kids affected have absolutely no ties to the homelands of their parents and are fluent in English. And better educated too.
