A cold home coming for Iowa family
Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 09:05 PM by liberal N proud
Blizzard blows snow into Newell, IA home

"We were out of town just for the weekend visiting our daughter in Chicago and her family and my husband had asked Jim, his brother, to make sure the furnace is running and see how the dog was we had left him in the garage," Betty Ehlers said.

And when Jim came over here it's hard to imagine but this big pile of snow right here was actually inside that door right over there.

"Looked through the garage door, the entrance into the house and the only thing I said was oh my gosh," Jim Ehlers said.

And that is an understatement look at this! Strong blizzard winds pushed this door open, letting all kinds of snow make its way inside their house!

1. Yes... but how is the DOG?
Can I possibly be the only one asking that? Not a single mention through the rest of the story?

3. Hopefully no mention of the dog means it's OK!

8. This was a rural home either the dog lived in the barn or...
They had someone taking care of it.

2. Shovel it out before it melts and ruins everything it touches!

5. I was in Boston in Feb '02.
Setting up for a Trade Show at the old Convention Center.

A monster storm came in off the water, so I sprinted to my rental car to try to make it back to Back Bay while I still could.

When I got to the car and opened the door, a massive blast of wind peeled the door all the way into the front quarter-panel and there was not a thing I could do about it.

I managed to get back to town and sit out the storm at the Colonnade. The Trade Show (Boston Gift Show) was canceled.

A few days later, I got back to the site and that Lexus was jammed-packed with snow that had the density of ice. The wind had absolutely packed that car with snow.

Effing hilarious.

But this was that family's house.

Damn, I am glad I live out here.

6. The wind can pack snow pretty hard
I can remember snow storms that blew drifts of 20 feet that you could drive a snowmobile right up on top without leaving tracks.

7. There's something oddly appealing about those photos
Maybe the juxtaposition of a nice warm interior with the snowdrifts, like, if you *had* to be in a blizzard, at least you could also still be inside. Or something.

9. I had to shovel out my garage last winter because someone left the door open
It is no fun, I can imagine cleaning it out of a house. It would get places you wouldn't even think to check.

But if you get it out before it melts, it should be ok. Scoop it out and use a wet-dry vacuum to clean up the rest is the only way I can think of doing it.

10. The brother in law had the house cleaned up before they got
home. I am guessing he took care of the dog.

But the garage couldn't be that warm could it?
