RimJob on DADT "the international homosexual conspiracy"
You just know he wants to say "The international Jewish conspiracy"

As 'hard' as the Right tries, they just can't get away from hating teh Jews.

That particular vileness crosses all lines.

in the pantheon of preposterous lies, and

LIES, damned LIES, homicidal LIES

make the world go down.

The star of David, the pink triangle, the communist menace:

when I hear "international" as denunciation, I know the direction that train is going to.

12. That's not really true.
Edited on Sun Dec-19-10 08:31 AM by Marr
Well, *some*, sure- but you can find some flat out bigots in any group. Left, right, Muslim, Christian, Jew... any group.

Generally speaking, I'd say that, while people on the left commonly criticize the state of Israel, they're not generally anti-semitic. Equating the two is like saying there's no difference between Obama's critics on the left and his "he's a soshulist fashist" critics on the right.

18. don't try to split hairs..
...around here, if you don't agree with our unconditional support for our "friend" Israel, you are definitely a closet anti-semite.

I always thought that "friendship" involved reciprocation, but somehow we just hand Israel money and they hand us trouble and that makes them our "friend". The only "friend" in the region don'chaknow!

29. Next Time You See Somebody Equating Legitimate Criticism Of Israel With Anti-Semitism
You should call him or her out because it does two things. It gives real anti-semites a place to hide while stifling constructive dialogue.

Defining anti-semitism is like defining what is obscene. As Potter Stewart said "I know it when I see it."

13. I defy you to point out examples of 'Jew-hating' on the left
Edited on Sun Dec-19-10 08:31 AM by Cirque du So-What
There's a lot of opposition to 'zionist' policy, sure, but there are important distinctions between zionism, the Jewish religion, Jewish ethnic identity, and Israeli citizenship for that matter. Lumping any & all opposition to the actions of the Israeli government under the heading 'anti-Semitism' is intellectually dishonest and IMO mere shit-stirring.

19. Holw About The Suggestion That
Edited on Sun Dec-19-10 08:40 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
"Zionists own Hollywood, Washington, and Wall Street."

I think that is an anti-semitic sentiment , and it has been defended here, much to to the chagrin of the administrators who have locked any thread discussing it, due to the level of support it was receiving.

One can be critical of Israeli policies without being an anti-semite. One can be supportive of Israeli policies and be an anti-semite. That's not what we are discussing.

23. Yes, I'm familiar with that form of bigotry
but I was answering a post whose thesis is that 'the left' is just as anti-Semitic as the right, and I was challenging that notion. The examples you cite are mostly spoken by those on the right; I don't recall hearing anyone on the left complaining about Jews (not zionists: important distinction, after all) in Hollywood, DC, or on Wall Street - just conservatroids.

27. Well, It Was A Left Wing Icon Who Made That Odious Suggestion
Edited on Sun Dec-19-10 09:02 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
And if you do an auto-search you will find folks here endorsing that sentiment. If you go to Stormfront you will see they are obsessed with the notion of ZOG (Zionist Occupied Government). If folks are going to lambaste them as inveterate bigots and much worse shouldn't those on the left who subscribe to such notions be lambasted as well.

I think maybe a better argument would be there they aren't on the left and the left doesn't want them. However they claim to be on the left...

Again, Israel is a nation and criticism of it is as legitimate as criticism of any nation but that's not what I was addressing.

on edit Can we go back to bashing Rim Job or Bob Rob. I rather discuss what unites us than divides us.

I can't help myself when people reflexively make comments condemning 'the left' as though they're obligated to find fault and draw false analogies every time a complaint against conservatives is made.

32. The so-called "Christian Zionists" fit your last profile,
i.e. "one can be supportive of Israeli policies and be an anti-Semite."

John Hagee's group Christians United For Israel (CUFI) can always be counted to support the hardline Likudnik agenda. But underneath their surface veneer of "love" for Israel and the Jews is a particularly virulent strain of Christian anti-Semitism. Some Jews are taken in by it, but fortunately most are not.

I've seen it right here on DU, many times. One of the things that I dislike about deleting posts is that shit like that gets thrown in the Memory Hole -- hard to call people out on it later.

Does the Right have more anti-Semitism? Undoubtedly. Do we have some of our own? Abso-freaking-lutely.

8. Disagree - I think Jews are about the only non-Christians most American right-wingers don't hate.
For one thing "Judaeo-Christian" is a very useful way of not being in the position of saying "the state should enforce just our religion, not anyone elses".

that were obviously badly retooled versions of the anti-Semitic sites that shocked me so much in the 1990s when I was first online. It looked to me like they had just done a quick search-and-replace on certain keywords.

15. Unless you're talking about a Jew they disagree with.
Edited on Sun Dec-19-10 08:32 AM by Marr
Then the racial epithets start flowing immediately. The American right-wing consider Jews part of their "in group" politically, because they support so many of the Israeli government's policies. But any Jew who sets him/herself outside that specific category is going to find that they're as much "outgroup" as a Muslim or a Mexican.

39. That's for damn sure.
My "friend" John Hagee (Christians United For Israel) sometimes forgets himself and rhetorically sets "the Jews" and "the liberals" in opposition, forgetting or ignoring the fact that most Jews *ARE* liberals. Where the fundies really make me sick is when they start talking about "true Jews," presumably referring to the ultra-Orthodox. Just who the hell are THEY to define who is a "true Jew" and who isn't?

17. Right-wingers tend to demand Jews accept a Devil's bargain, though.
Jews are only accepted provided they agree to give Christian theocrats carte blanche, which of course can only lead to disaster for religious minorities.

37. They'd have to see them as people for that to qualify, though
For the most part they really don't; the ones you're referring to don't see Jews as people undeserving of hatred, they see them as nothing more than components of a prophecy that should be kept mostly intact long enough for Christian purposes. There's more room for hatred there than there is for, say, a screwdriver or telephone, and they're perfectly willing to disdain any of those should they misbehave.
