Abdullah speaks with Obama, tells him not to humiliate Mubarak, will prop up his regime if Washington withdraws its support, 'Times' reports.

Talkbacks (5)

US President Barack Obama spoke with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia Wednesday to discuss events in Egypt. The Saudi King reportedly said that in the case that the United States withdraws its financial support of Cairo, that his kingdom would prop up Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's regime, The Times reported.

According to the report, the Saudi king told Obama not to push Mubarak too hard, so as not to humiliate him amid the ongoing protests demanding his ouster.

...

White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs suggested that some Egyptian leaders thought they could wait out the protesters by offering up some concessions and assuming "life will return to normal" after years of repression. He added that the Egyptian protesters demanding change "are not likely to dissipate until the government takes some genuine steps."

Egypt takes aim at Al-Jazeera for protest coverage
(AP) – 1 hour ago

CAIRO (AP) — ...

Security forces have detained, and later released, at least nine Al-Jazeera correspondents since the protests erupted last month. Authorities have banned its Arabic and English language channels from broadcasting and revoked the press credentials of all of its journalists. The channel has continued to report despite the restrictions.

Pro-government thugs set the Qatar-based network's Cairo offices ablaze last week, along with the equipment inside, as part of a broad pattern of attacks on journalists covering the unrest.

The network has won accolades from many around the globe for its near round-the-clock coverage of the unprecedented unrest in Egypt, and seen a spike in interest in its report from U.S. viewers. But it has collided head-on with Egyptian authorities, who have sought to portray the broadcaster — the Arab world's most popular — as a malevolent force fueling the unrest.

Egypt's newly appointed vice president, Omar Suleiman, told Egyptian newspaper editors on Tuesday that "certain satellite channels" are provoking the protesters and insulting Egypt.
A week earlier, Suleiman said: "I blame some friendly countries who own unfriendly channels that have fueled the youth against the country by lying and showing the situation as worse than it is."

Strikes erupt in Egypt; anti-Mubarak protesters remain defiant
By the CNN Wire Staff
February 10, 2011 -- Updated 1211 GMT (2011 HKT)

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- ...

...

National Railway Council employees called for longer contracts, prompting a pledge to extend them from their leaders. Some did not return to work Thursday, said Mostafa Qinawi, head of the Railway Council.

Employees of the steel industry and the Suez Canal Port Authority also took to the streets to demand better salaries, state-run al-Ahram newspaper said.

Protests sparked fears that the Suez Canal -- a significant oil transport hub -- would be shut down and send oil prices skyrocketing.

The workers demanded better compensation and transparency in executive salaries, the spokesman said.

CAIRO -- Bus drivers and public transport workers in Cairo joined thousands of state employees on strike Thursday in spreading labor unrest that has pumped further strength and momentum into Egypt's wave of anti-government protests. With its efforts to manage the crisis failing, the government warned of the potential for a coup.

The warning from Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit was the second from the regime this week that a coup could take place, a sign that the reinvigorated protests could face a new crackdown.

Speaking to the Arab news network Al-Arabiya on Thursday, Aboul Gheit said that if "adventurers" take over the process of reform the military "will be compelled to defend the constitution and national security ... and we'll find ourselves in a very grave situation."

Youth activists organizing the 17-day-old protests demanding the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak planned to up the ante even further, calling for an expanded rally on Friday, hoping to repeat a showing earlier this week that drew about a quarter-million people.

Muslim Brotherhood Says It's Not Looking to Grab Power in Egypt
Feb 9, 2011 – 1:21 PM

CAIRO, Egypt -- The outlawed Muslim Brotherhood said today that embattled President Hosni Mubarak must step down but insisted it has no plans to hijack the Egyptian political process.

"The Muslim Brotherhood are not seeking power," Muhammad Mursi, a Brotherhood leader, told reporters as anti-government protesters flooded Tahrir Square in central Cairo for a 16th day.

"We want to participate, not to dominate. We will not have a presidential candidate. We want to participate and help," said Mursi, who has joined in meetings with new Vice President Omar Suleiman.

Seeking to assuage Western fears that the Brotherhood will make a power grab, Mursi said Egypt's largest organized opposition group was "with the will of the people."

Trade unions: the revolutionary social network at play in Egypt and Tunisia
The media have focused on Facebook and Twitter, but the pro-democracy movements have flourished thanks to unions

Eric Lee and Benjamin Weinthal
guardian.co.uk, Thursday 10 February 2011 12.57 GMT

Perhaps the most overlooked factor in the demise of the authoritarian Ben Ali regime in Tunisia, and the weakening of Hosni Mubarak's grip on state power in Egypt, has been the trade unions in both countries.

While the media has reported on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook as revolutionary methods of mobilisation, it was the old-fashioned working class that enabled the pro-democracy movements to flourish.

As working men and women in Egypt became increasingly vulnerable to exploitation and a deteriorating quality of life, the only legal trade unions – the ones affiliated to the Egyptian Trade Union Federation (ETUF) – proved worthless. The result of all of this was an unprecedented wave of strikes across the public and private sectors that began in 2004 and has continued to the present day. During the first four years of the current strike wave, more than 1,900 strikes took place and an estimated 1.7 million workers were involved.

As one worker in a fertiliser company put it, the effect of going on strike was to convince the employer "that they had a company with human beings working in it. In the past, they dealt with us as if we were not human."

Analysis: Labor strikes pose fresh test for Mubarak

By Marwa Awad and Alexander Dziadosz
CAIRO | Thu Feb 10, 2011 6:53am EST
(Reuters) - An outbreak of strikes by Egyptian workers, emboldened by more than two weeks of anti-government protests, is compounding the challenge to President Hosni Mubarak as he confronts a mass movement determined to oust him.

Thousands of workers in industries like textiles, steel and telecommunications are staging protests, sit-ins and strikes over wages and working conditions across the country, suggesting a spirit of civil disobedience is spreading.

...

But the acceleration of the strike movement could push the country's army, now limited mostly to guarding streets and state buildings, to step in to avert economic paralysis, analysts say.

"The revolution is increasing the expectations of different social forces who think they have rights that have been ignored for a long time," said Gamal Soltan, senior research fellow at the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies.

"I think it is implicit that if their demands are not met, they are going to escalate them and politicize them, perhaps joining the protesters. They have a bargaining chip that they didn't have before."

Special Report: In Saudi Arabia, a clamor for education

By Ulf Laessing and Asma Alsharif
JEDDAH | Thu Feb 10, 2011 3:13am EST

(Reuters) - Saudi teenager Abdulrahman Saeed lives in one of the richest countries in the world, but his prospects are poor, he blames his education, and it's not a situation that looks like changing soon.

"There is not enough in our curriculum," says Saeed, 16, who goes to an all-male state school in the Red Sea port of Jeddah. "It is just theoretical teaching, and there is no practice or guidance to prepare us for the job market."

Saeed wants to study physics but worries that his state high school is failing him. He says the curriculum is outdated, and teachers simply repeat what is written in text books without adding anything of practical value or discussions. Even if the teachers did do more than the basics, Saeed's class, at 32 students, is too big for him to get adequate attention. While children in Europe and Asia often start learning a language at five or six, Saudi students start learning English at 12. Much time is spent studying religion and completing exercises heavy with moral instruction. One task for eighth grade students: "Discuss the problem of staying up late, its causes, effects and cure."

In the face of rising unemployment, Saeed has taken parts of his education into his own hands. He learned how to use the internet on his own and sets himself research projects in his own time to try to make up for his school's shortcomings. "The subjects available are not enough to carry us to the career or specialization that is needed for the job," he complains.

Iranian official warns against opposition rally
By the CNN Wire Staff
February 9, 2011 -- Updated 1924 GMT (0324 HKT)

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- Iranian authorities have warned against any attempt by Iran's opposition movement to hold a rally in support of the popular uprisings in the Middle East, Iran's state news agency reported.

"We definitely see them as enemies of the revolution and spies, and we will confront them with force," said Revolutionary Guard Cmdr. Hossein Hamedani, according to IRNA news agency.

Last week, Iran's two leading opposition figures, Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karrubi, requested permission to hold a rally on February 14.

Iran's hard-line leadership has expressed strong support for the protests in Egypt, calling them an "Islamic awakening."

Interview with Hossam el-Hamalawy (3arabawy)
Professor Mark LeVine interviews journalist and blogger Hossam el-Hamalawy on the situation in Egypt.
Mark LeVine Last Modified: 27 Jan 2011 13:07 GMT

Hossam el-Hamalawy, an Egyptian journalist and blogger
Hossam el-Hamalawy, is an Egyptian journalist and blogger for the website 3arabawy. Mark LeVine, professor of History at UC Irvine, managed to catch up with Hossam via Skype to get a first-hand account of events unfolding in Egypt.

Mark LeVine: What is the relationship between regional and local events here?

Hossam el-Hamalawy: You have to understand that the regional is local here. In 2000 the protests didn't started as anti-regime protests but rather against Israel and in support of Palestinians. The same occurred with the US invasion of Iraq three years later. But once you take to the streets and are confronted by regime violence you start asking questions: Why is Mubarak sending troops to confront protesters instead of confronting Israel? Why is he exporting cement to be used by Israel to build settlements instead of helping Palestinians? Why are police so brutal with us when we're just trying to express our solidarity with Palestinians in a peaceful manner? And so regional issues like Israel and Iraq were shifted to local issues. And within moments, the same protesters who chanted pro-Palestinian slogans started chanting against Mubarak. The specific internal turning point in terms of protests was 2004, when dissent turned domestic.

...

Mark LeVine: What about the role of the US in this conflict. How do people on the street view its positions?

Hossam el-Hamalawy: Mubarak is the second largest recipient of US foreign aid aside from Israel. He's known to be America's thug in the region; one of the tools of American foreign policy and implementing its agenda of security for Israel and the smooth flow of oil while keeping Palestinians in line. So it's no secret that this dictatorship has enjoyed the backing of US administrations since day one, even during Bush's phony pro-democracy rhetoric. So one should not be surprised by Clinton's ludicrous statements that were more or less defending the Mubarak regime, since one of the pillars of US foreign policy was to keep regimes stable at expense of freedom and civil liberties.

We don't expect anything from Obama, whom we regard as a great hypocrite. But we hope and expect the American people - trade unions, professors' associations, student unions, activist groups, to come out in support of us. What we want for the US government is to completely get out of the picture. We don't want any sort of backing; just cut aid to Mubarak immediately and withdraw backing from him, withdraw from all Middle Eastern bases, and stop supporting the state of Israel.

Ultimately, Mubarak will do whatever he has to do to protect himself. He will suddenly adopt the most anti-US rhetoric if he thought that would help him save his skin. At the end of the day he's committed to his own interests, and if he thinks the US won't support him, he'll turn somewhere else. The reality is that any really clean government that comes to power in the region will come into open conflict with the US because it will call for radical redistribution of wealth and ending support for Israel or other dictatorships. So we don't expect any help from America, just to leave us alone.
