A living, breathing case for the draft...across all lines conscription. |

Egypt.
Of course, it remains to be seen, but if the kid down the street is manning one of those tanks, he will think twice before he blows his neighbor away. Mubarak's biggest mistake is that his Army is from everywhere. Had that been the case in Vietnam early on or if this was the case now, we would be in a very different place...if Egypt had our system there would be a lot more dead folks in the Square.

If wealthy people have to send the kids to Europe until they're 40, they will. Their kids will not be drafted, not in the past, not now, not ever.
All military people are taught one thing: obey orders. It will take a whole lot more than is happening now to stop them attacking their neighbors.
Better start looking at what was and what is. "Woulda, coulda, shoulda" will get you nowhere.
No draft.

6. They were ordered not to react. |

Ordered. From the top.
While that chain of command holds up, they will follow orders, just like military men all over the world always have. If that chain of command starts to break down, a split between officers and non coms, then you'll see something else. However, they have not been ordered to clear the square.
Yet.
When that order comes down, they will do it.
