This was from a local forum:
Wild weather through Wednesday, be prepared to take care of yourselves. Fire, police, CHP might be overwhelmed with calls.
(1) No candles. You can start a fire, and maybe all fire personnel are working on other life-saving issues...and guess what? Your house burns down. Get batteries today, if necessary.
(2) Check on elderly neighbors (food, warmth, flooding issues). If evacuations occur, what are their plans?
(3) Slow way down when driving - watch for flooding and potholes. DON'T ever drive into a water pool, or flooded/ing area. Waters can rise VERY FAST, and trap you. Mud slides are no joke...dangerous.
(4) Have plenty of gasoline in your car. If you have an electric car, charge up.
(5) Be wise; get sand bags in place
(6) Store fresh water (refer to your earthquake plans)
(7) Buy plenty of food for you and pets...remember six years ago when we were marooned for almost a week because of roads impassible, and grocery stores were running out of food? Gas stations ran out of gas.
(8) JUST IN CASE...if you have to evacuate because of flooding, refer to your evacuation plans for wildfires. Be ready to leave. Don't argue about when to leave, and do follow instructions. Please don't make emergency personnel come and rescue you because you wouldn't leave when advised to do so; don't become an unnecessary burden. Don't risk your own life. Listen to where to go from Emergency people...they know where you can go for safety. Don't decide to go somewhere else...it might not be safe there.
(9) Activate your phone tree w/neighbors and friends to stay on top of all emergencies. Think ahead. If power goes out, check with anyone who is a short wave radio operator, and share information w/neighbors. Now is the time to be talkative!

2. I had to look that up. |

The distance between thumb and another finger to the elbow on an average person measures about 24 digits or 6 palms or 1½ feet. This is about 45 cm or 18 inches. This cubit is sometimes referred to as a "natural cubit" of 1½ feet and was used in the Roman system of measures and in different Greek systems.

Ark. Now that you know, you can go on Jeopardy!
For years I always thought they were saying "cubic" :7 - not that that made any sense, either.
