Anti-smoking (covering tobacco and marijuana) advocates push Santa Rosa for apartment ban
Anti-smoking advocates push Santa Rosa for apartment ban

Clean-air advocates met with Councilwoman Susan Gorin, who was then the mayor, several weeks ago about bringing such an ordinance to the city, said Pamela Granger of the American Lung Association. They are in a preliminary stage of the process, meeting with the city's largest apartment owners to gain support.

Once property owners are on board, Granger said, she and other groups plan to petition the Santa Rosa City Council for a ban that protects apartment dwellers from second-hand smoke.

Studies have shown that even when smoke remains inside a unit, second-hand smoke can be a health problem for neighbors, Granger said.

"There is no such thing as a place you can go where the second-hand smoke doesn't have an impact," Granger said.

Anti-smoking advocates will be pressing for strict bans covering 100 percent of units and covering tobacco and marijuana, unlike the partial bans in Rohnert Park and Sebastopol.

1. I wish these bans had been possible when I lived in an apartment.

I couldn't open my windows because of the carcinogens that came from neighbors.

2. Remember when anti-smokers would scoff at the "slippery slope" argument of
controlling people's behavior in the privacy of their own homes and cars?

Notice how they are throwing pot in the mix as well?

3. Hey I know! Lets ban those folks from cooking or barbecuing too. Smoke is smoke.
Look, I'm not at all against having no smoking in confined public places but some people just take it too far. If these folks want to create a ban against lawful activity in someone else's home based on the argument they're citing. Then it would be equally legitimate to call for a ban on all activity in the area which creates toxins and particulates in the air. No automotive traffic, no cooking, no gas powered law mowers & leaf blowers. You get the picture.

6. Good one hayu_lol..
Also how about farting. Methane exhaust is very toxic, some more than others. So maybe we should have a fart police to call if you hear your neighbor farting. Or how about if we all just stop exhaling.

Do I really need to post the the sarcasm tag.

Peace,
Xicano

5. I highly doubt it will go anywhere.
Let's put it this way: Santa Rosa is not Sebastopol.

7. I knew it....
As soon as pot had a chance of becoming legal, the anti-smoking zealots would try to ban the smoking of that also.

8. Does anybody know of a country where people are free to live their lives? Can't wait until
they start in on those who are over-eating junk food.

9. I just tell people:
Go sit in your garage for 2 hours with your car running, and I will sit in mine smoking and let's see which is more dangerous to people :)
