"A Chicago Christmas Carol" - Dickens meets Upton Sinclair
Last night I saw a staged version of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" adapted to 1908 Chicago, where Scrooge is a slaughterhouse overlord and Tiny Tim is a union organizer. A brilliant idea, and a brilliant adaptation.

Makes it even easier to understand why the story never quite made it to the A-list of American Christmas cultural icons - its attack on capitalism is a bit too dangerous for our sensibilities. I can't imagine that even hardhearted Repubs in the audience weren't moved.

Highly recommended, but it closed last night. :( Maybe next year.

3. Say What? "story never quite made it to the A-list of American Christmas cultural icons"
A Christmas Carol has been told and retold a gazillion times in print, radio, tv, and the big screen. Local playhouses run it every holiday season. It is definitely A-list in the US.

Best left-wing musical since The Pajama Game.
