Death toll mounts as Libyan security forces target protesters
per Amnesty International

Amnesty International has accused the Libyan authorities of recklessly shooting at anti-government protesters after the organization learned that at least 46 people had been shot dead by security forces in the last 72 hours.

Sources at al-Jala hospital in Benghazi today told Amnesty International that patients' most common injuries were bullet wounds to the head, chest and neck.

"This alarming rise in the death toll, and the reported nature of the victims' injuries, strongly suggests that security forces are permitted use lethal force against unarmed protesters calling for political change," said Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International's director for the Middle East and North Africa

2. Death Toll In Libya Protest 'Hits 120'
Edited on Sat Feb-19-11 02:42 PM by tpsbmam
From Sky News:

Exiled Libyan opposition groups claim up to 120 people have been killed in Libya, amid reports snipers fired at mourners in the eastern city of Benghazi.

The estimated death toll is higher than figures given by Human Rights Watch (HRW), but the exiled Libyan nationals claim they are quoting numbers from doctors based in Benghazi.

They say another 1,000 people have also been wounded during the three days of protests.

HRW estimated the death toll at 84, a figure which was based on reports from witnesses and hospital sources.

Who the hell knows? I'm sure reports will keep getting out and may vary drastically depending on who's doing the reporting. It's ugly, that's all I know -- people in Libya are courageously rising up against a known tyrant who uses brutal means to quell dissent.

5. He's still hanging on. I'm watching it on Al Jazeera
It's still going on. Over 200 killed according to al Jazeera.

I'm in Venezuela, where President Chavez has managed to become friends with some pretty interesting characters, such as Kaddafi, Lukashenko, Assad, and the Iranian dude, Amahdinejad. I wonder if Kadafi will come over and lodge with Chavez. Chavez has a very nice tent he got from Kaddafi, he could let the guy have it back so he feels at home. They could take him to the Coro sand dunes, park a couple of camels in front of his tent, and Chavez could stop by and ask him for advice on how to run a repressive state. After all, Kaddafi did last over 40 years.
