Newt Gingrich Blames Nation's Problems on Unemployed People

Newt Gingrich, who is currently mulling a presidential bid in 2012, said at a political event in South Carolina on Thursday that most of America's problems can be blamed on the "leftist news media," Hollywood, tenured academics, overpaid federal workers, and unemployed people.

"I'm opposed to giving people money for doing nothing," he told the crowd of 250 cheering GOP activists in a state with a 10.6 percent unemployment rate.

Comparing unemployment benefits to welfare, a system he worked with former President Clinton to overhaul in the mid-1990s, Gingrich asserts that the country spent $134 billion last year on unemployment compensation "and got nothing for it." Instead of wasting money "paying people to do nothing for 99 weeks," he would make job training mandatory for anyone getting an unemployment check.
Hey, Dems—use stuff like this in ads!

2. "make job training mandatory"
I have no problem with a job-training program at the federal level (in principle), but one wonders how Newtie would propose to pay for it?

3. What is the use of job training when there are no jobs anyway?
Edited on Mon Dec-20-10 06:38 PM by tblue37
What we need is a massive works program, like the WPA. We could repair our crumbling infrastructure, put people to work, and stimulate the economy--all at the same time!

19. Exactly
Train for WHAT? To become an electrician or a plumber for all those foreclosed homes? To work in manufacturing?, Oh yeah those jobs are leaving. I suppose they can train every unemployed person to be a security guard for the rich. Job training is useless if there aren't sufficient jobs that pay sufficient wages for people to live on.

Typical Republican tactic, blame the people suffering the most and those who point out the problem and offer solutions not automatically beneficial to the rich.

5. Excuse me but that is what R's have been blaming for their screwed up tax cut scams
for the rich since Reagan muttered the words welfare queens. Today R's blame all the countries woes on welfare queens, the disabled and anyone who has been out of a job longer then 90days. They are a broken record when playing the blame game yet at the same time call for more tax cuts, more military spending while cutting safety nets to the middle class.

7. I am so sick of these fuckers projecting the problems they cause on others
All they do is fuck up and then blame the other guy for their fuck up.

They have done this for years and they use the media to propel the shit into the brains of the uneducated voters.

The GOP has pushed the welfare queen meme since Reagan was in office and this is just more of that same old shit. When will someone throw the truth and facts in these liars faces?

14. Yes, those unemployed people demanded their jobs be shipped overseas.
They saw it in a movie written by a tenured academic.

What an awful lot of wasted air to say "Don't blame us, we only caused this. Blame the people who saw it coming, or are suffering from it."

17. Why do people get lazy and stop working when Republicans are in office?
When Reagan and Bush I were in office, people were lazy.

But when Clinton was president, people suddenly got ambitious and responsible and went to work!

Once Bush got in, they all got lazy again and started lying around collecting welfare and unemployment from the rest of us.

Now that they've become used to being paid for doing nothing, we can't even push them off their soft comfy couches!!

Hey Newt -- What do Republicans DO that causes people to be so lazy?? Maybe if we did the direct opposite, they'd get back to work!

21. Perhaps the media would like to have a few of the unemployed on
to counter Gingrich's comments.

No? They don't think that's necessary? Color me shocked.

Job retraining costs MONEY, Mr. Gingrich. Most of the unemployed don't have it. Unemployment might pay enough to keep a roof over your head and food on the table, but it sure doesn't pay for anything else. Besides that, what jobs should the unemployed "retrain" for? Many industries will never hire in the numbers they did in the 80's and 90's again.

If the Democrats refuse to go for the jugular on this one (and they should,) they've just ceded the debate to Gingrich and his little friends.

23. So Nut Grinch wants to spend even MORE money?
Fucking communist!

On a serious note, I'd love to see the particulars on his so-called proposal. I daresay anyone drawing unemployment who is not having luck finding a job would not complain at the prospect of training up in something new if they weren't finding anything in their chosen career path. But since it's Nutty, the devil is in both the details and the man.

26. Thrice-Bluebeard-wannabe Newt GingDick migrates to the Batshit-Insane Buffet.
Yes, let's blame the victims of 30 years of King-Sized Republican Capitalist FUCK ups. Right, THAT will win hearts and minds.

Well, I guess people DID "ask" for this bad economy . . . what, with continually trusting people like you and Reagan and Uncle Milty and Grammy and the Bewshes and the rest of the neo-Hitler Youth on globalism, deregulation and turning America into a corporatist Ponz . . . er . . . paradise, RIGHT?

How anybody . . . ANYbody can think that after 30 years of GOP and corporate fuck ups that this route is the way to go is beyond me. You'd almost have to be an Ohioan.

33. Newt Gingrich was fined $300,000 penalty for violating ethics rules in 1997
Gingrich paid the first $50,000 on May 15, 1997. The second installment was due June 1. Under terms of the agreement, another $50,000 is due Nov. 30.

The remaining $150,000 is due Jan. 2, 1999, and could be borrowed from Dole under an agreement that would require Gingrich to pay 10 percent annual interest and repay the loan by 2005.
