CRETE, Neb — A freezing dog clinging to an ice block floating down a river near Crete in southeast Nebraska is safe and warm, thanks to the city’s fire department.

Crete Fire Chief Nahlon Kohl said the Dalmatian was rescued Sunday afternoon from the Big Blue River. He says the dog was using its front paws to hang onto the ice block.

Firefighters pulled the dog out of the water and took it to an animal hospital in Crete. Kohl says the dog is expected to live.

The dog was not wearing any tags, and Kohl is trying to find its owners. — AP
