14. So have I - all the sites
I found - NASA overcast, spaceweather - Cocacola space center is lame. So far they all suck. The pictures here are the best I've seen all night.

28. Fabulous! What camera, what lens?
It would have been nice to have been able to take shots here. It was amazing with the clouds. For a while the clouds cleared and you could see the stars with clouds framing the whole thing.

I love to get shots of wild life, as well. I got some recent beauties of a red-tail hawk outside our offices. Nothing as tight as these (I was shooting through glass)...

I am coming to photography late in life...but loving it!

Welcome to Winter!

16. Awesome! Too cloudy here to see the moon, so I went to
NASA'a live-stream, but couldn't see anything there either as they had cloudy skies.

A full moon, an total eclipse. Solstice and Meteor Shower (live on NASA's site right now and anyone who has clear skies might be able to see some meteors.

The last time there was a total eclipse of the moon on Solstice, Galileo was alive. Amazing!

Thank you so much for the photos ~

21. A meteor streaked through the sky near Orion just as the moon went into
full eclipse. The meteor was the same orange colour as the moon. It was breath-taking. What the photos don't capture is the moon's appearance as an orange pearl. The moon appears very much to be an orb rather than a disk. Its surreal. It is remarkable and thrilling to see.

Yay for the moon. Yay for the massive mysterious universe. Quite a show.

I tried to take pics, but it's so dark (who's have thunk that, at 3 AM, right?) but the moon is RED, and half covered right now. So freakin cool.

29. Thank you for the great shots, everybody!
It's been solid cloud cover here in Portland, OR (as usual for this time of year!) so I haven't been able to see a darned thing all night.

There are some great shots here and all are well appreciated. Thanks for sharing with those of us who don't have a view.

34. I tried to take pics
but eh. Maybe one came out.

However. I cherish the thought of going outside, with my kids, and watching this amazing light show. An experience that none of us will ever forget.

Maybe some things depend on the providence of others to deliver (i.e. photos), while other things depend on the actual sharing of the incident with those you love.

39. Excellent shots, all
From Bucks County, PA, directly north of Philadelphia: I went outside and looked at it a few times. Penumbral totality was easily visible but did not turn the Moon very orange. Umbral totality was deep red, but the Moon was extremely dim.

"Back in the day" (circa 1975) when I was a kid, I did some astrophotography with a borrowed Argus C-50, the camera of choice in those days, with Kodak's ASA 400 B/W film (Tri-X?). The stuff posted here absolutely blows them away. Thanks to everyone for posting!

Edited on Tue Dec-21-10 05:13 PM by pitohui
i was not set up to take any photos myself but a photographer from the local newspaper did a fine job:

http://photos.nola.com/tpphotos/2010/12/winter_solstice_lunar_eclipse.html

the color was unbelievable, red orange at totality

i am sorry i don't know how to copy the photo over but it's worth clicking to see!

Edited on Tue Dec-21-10 06:18 PM by roamer65
but the visibility was crap due to clouds in the Midwest. Since I saw the February 2008 one, I skipped this one.

I can't wait until the August 21st, 2017 total SOLAR eclipse. I am not going to miss that one.

Very nice astrophotography, btw!
