The Washington Post reports that Holbrooke's last words came just before the 21-hour operation:

As Holbrooke was sedated for surgery, his final words were to his Pakistani surgeon, family members said: "You've got to stop this war in Afghanistan."

He was a very good man trying all the time to minimize the damage of the policies of both the US and other powers. We will miss him and just because I disagree with most US foreign policy I don't doubt for a second that he was acting in what he believed would be best for the human race. This from a very old lefty who has seen a lot of evil shit flow under the bridge in my lifetime. I hope his final words are listened to by those in power.

Just about the most powerful statement I've ever heard. What an incredible man -- he knew he was in serious trouble and that was foremost in his mind. I'm in awe and even sadder at the loss of this great man.
